George Barnett [b.2.4.10]

George Barnett was the tenth child of George Barnett & Mary Brangwin born July 24th, 1826 at Harpsden, Oxon & christened September 10th , 1826 at Rotherfield Greys Independent Chapel, Oxon.

In 1841 George was living in Upton, Berks where he was working as an agricultural labourer for his uncle, Francis Brangwin.

George was listed in the 1851 census as living in Appleford, Berks & lodging with the Gibbs family.  His occupation was given as a policeman.

George married Sarah Ody on April 24th, 1851 at Appleford, Berks.  Sarah was born c1826 at Long Wittenham, Berks, the daughter of  Martha Quarterman & William Ody, a carpenter.

By 1861 George & Sarah were living at Excelsior Place, Sutton Courtney, Berks & George was now a railway switchman.

The 1871 census shows George & Sarah living at the Junction Hotel, Dudcott, Berks.  George was now a railway inspector.

Sadly Sarah died in 1878 & was buried on February 25th, 1878 at St Julius & St Aaran church, Llanharan, Glamorgan.

In 1881 widowed George was working as a colliery labourer & he was lodging with the Watkins family at Dola, Llanharan, Glamorgan.

After Sarah’s death George decided to emigrate to the USA & joined his brother James in Ohio.

By 1900 George was living with his nephew, Henry Barnett [b.2.4.4.3] & his family, in Providence Township, Ohio.  No occupation was given for him & his year of immigration was given as 1882.

Around 1901 George developed cancer of the lip & he died on May 18th, 1902. 

George is buried beside his brother James & sister-in-law Eliza in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Ohio.
