John Ellis [e.2.3]

John Ellis was the third child of Richard Ellis & Sarah Wass born at Palterton & christened May 24th, 1823 at St Leonard, Scarcliffe, Derbyshire.

John was working as a farm servant for farmer Christopher Norwood in Beighton, Derbyshire at the time of the 1841 census.  Also working as a servant for the family was Catherine Parkin who was to become John’s wife.

John married Catherine Parkin, aged 20, on October 16th, 1841 at the Cathedral Church of St Peter & St Paul, Sheffield.  Both gave their address as Park Hill & John, aged 18, gave his occupation as farmer.   Catherine was born c1820, the daughter of William Parkin, a farmer.

In 1851 John & Catherine were living at Sothall, Beighton, Derbyshire & John was a farm labourer.  They had a 9 year old son, William.

John & Catherine were still living at Sothal St, Beighton in 1861 & John was described as an agricultural labourer. 

By 1871 John & Catherine had moved to Sheffield Park, Sheffield, Yorkshire & were living at East Hill Lodge & John was now a gardener.  With them was a 7 year old niece, Ann Turner.

Catherine died in 1872 & was buried on July 17th at Beighton.

The children of John Ellis & Catherine Parkin were:

el.2.3.1  William Ellis born at Palterton & christened May 27th, 1842 at St Leonard’s, Scarcliffe, Derbyshire; died March 16th, 1905 in Atlantic City, New Jersey & buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, USA

In 1874 John married again.  His second wife was Jane Cartledge, a 53 year old spinster.  They married at the Cathedral Church of St Peter & St Paul, Sheffield on May 4th.  Jane was born at Hackenthorpe & christened November 19th, 1821 at Beighton, Derbyshire, the daughter of Jane & Joseph Cartledge, a grinder.

John & his new wife Jane were living at Richmond, Handsworth, Yorkshire in 1881 & John was now a groom.

By 1891 John had returned to Beighton & he & his wife Jane were living at Frenchmans Row.  John was now a greengrocer & living with them was a nephew, George Bellingham (33), a coal miner.

There is a death for John Ellis aged 77 in 1898 in Beighton, Derbyshire.  He was buried on September 28th.
