William Ellis was the fourth child of Maria & Samuel Ellis born June 8th, 1902 at Ryhope, Co Durham.
In 1911 William, his parents & 2 sisters and a brother were living at 9 Sunderland Terrace, Ryhope Colliery. His father was a coal miner examiner.
William married Lily Isabella Walker in July-September 1927, the marriage being registered in Sunderland. Lily was born March 21st, 1905, in Sunderland, daughter of Hannah & John Walker, a shipyard plater.
An article in the Sunderland Daily Echo & Shipping Gazette of June 6th, 1936 reported on William being in possession of a firearm. When a policeman called at his home at Alice St in connection with another matter, his wife Lily told him that her husband had a revolver & ‘she did not feel safe’. William stated that he had had the gun for 15 years & never removed from the drawer. He was fined 5s for not having the necessary certificate & the weapon was confiscated.
The Sunderland Daily Echo & Shipping Gazette of March 4th, 1938 revealed that William & Lily had an 8 year old son, Derrick, who was sadly knocked down & killed while crossing the road to a surgery to collect a bottle of medicine on October 16th, 1936. The driver, a Mr Raine of Gosforth, insurance inspector, was ordered by the court to pay £125 with costs to William & Lily.
The 1939 register shows William & his wife Lily Isabella & family living at 27 Alice Street, Ryhope & William was a miner (stoneman) incapacitated.
Daughter Brenda married Norman R Livall (Lovell) on September 4th, 1954 at St Aidan’s, Roker, Sunderland.
Daughter Florence married Raymond G Forsdick in Ipswich in 1958. They came to live in Blackpool, Lancs.
There is a death registered for Lily I Ellis in April-June 1966 at Blackpool, Lancs.
William died in Oct-December 1976, his death being registered at Chorley, Lancs.
