William Ellis [el.6.4.9]

William Ellis was the ninth child of Susannah Thorpe & Humphrey Ellis born July-September 1855 at Hucknall Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire.

William was living with his parents & sisters at Tibshelf in 1861.

By the time of the 1871 census William was the only child still at home & was employed as a coal miner at the age of 15. He & his parents were still living at Tibshelf.

William married Elizabeth Smith on April 16th 1876, at Blackwell. Witnesses at the wedding were William’s brother-in-law, George Riley, and Jane Smith.  Elizabeth was born c1858 at Greenhill Lane, Derbyshire.

In 1881 William & Elizabeth were living at Mount Pleasant, Blackwell, Derbyshire & William was a coal miner. They had a 4 year old daughter Elizabeth Ann.

Elizabeth gave birth to at least four more children, Hephzibah, Mary Jane, Sarah Ann & Agnes, before she died in 1887, aged 29. Elizabeth died at Stonebroom & was buried on June 7th at Tibshelf.  It is possible that she died after giving birth to a son as there is a burial for Frederick Ellis aged 1 month on July 10th, 1887 at Tibshelf.

The children of William Ellis & Elizabeth Smith were:

William’s second marriage took place on June 10th, 1889 at North Wingfield, Derbyshire. His second wife Helen Elizabeth Barker (nee Turner) had also previously been married & had 2 children to her former husband, Elijah Barker. Helen was christened January 12th, 1862 at Hoveton St John, Norfolk, the daughter of Sarah Allen & Charles Turner, a furnace labourer.

In 1891 William & Helen (Ellen in census) were living at Newton, Tibshelf Lane, Blackwell & William was still a coal miner. Children with them were Elizabeth (14) & Agnes (8) from William’s first marriage, & William & Helen’s daughter Florence E (1). Also with them were Helen’s children Sarah Ann Barker (9) & William Barker (6).

William’s daughter Elizabeth Ann married Alonzo Newbold, a coal miner, in Oct-December 1895 at Blackwell.

In 1911 William & Helen were living at Station Terrace, Newton, Alfreton, Derbyshire & William was still working as a coal miner hewer.  Children at home were Edith Florence, a dress maker, Elsie Annie, a domestic servant, John Charles Turner & Oswald Humphrey (7). Sadly little Oswald was to die later that year. Interestingly William & Helen appear to have been Primitive Methodists as Oswald was mentioned as having given a recitation during the celebration of the anniversary of their Sunday School in June of 1911.

Daughter Elizabeth Ann & husband Alonzo Newbold were living at 14 Lincoln St, Tibshelf, Alfreton in 1911 with their 7 children.

Daughter Hephzibah was living with her step-sister Sarah Ann Barker, now married to Arthur Stephenson, a sewing machine agent, & their 2 young children in 1911.  They were living at 20 Fisher Gate, Nottingham & Hephzibah was working for a hosiery manufacturer. She was to marry Frederick Pope in 1918.

Daughters Florence Edith & Elsie Annie both married in 1913.  They had a double wedding at the Primitive Methodist Church, Newton on Whit Monday.  Florence married Herbert Butler & Elsie married Thomas Milnes.  The brides wore gowns of oriental satin trimmed with oriental lace & wore veils with wreaths of orange blossom. A reception was held at the home of the brides.  (Derbyshire Courier, May 17th, 1913)

Helen died at Station Terrace, Newton, aged 64, & was buried on January 21st, 1926 at Blackwell.
