Eliza Alice Fry [f.2.1.1.4]

Eliza Alice Fry was the fourth child of John Fry & Mary Ann Newbery born Jan-march 1864 at Brighton, Sussex.

In 1871 Eliza was living with her parents & brothers & sisters at 48 Jersey St, Brighton.

Eliza was still living at home in 1881 at Hope Cottage, Horsted Keynes, Sussex.

In 1891 Eliza was working as a nurse in domestic service for Gertrude & Edward Harris, an underwriter & insurance broker, & their young family at Kemp Town, Brighton. It appears that Eliza gave birth to a daughter Dorothy Bradley Fry who became known as Dorothy Bradley Hurren after Eliza’s marriage.

f.2.1.1.4.1 Dorothy Bradley Fry born July-September 1892 at Brighton, Sussex.

Eliza married George Hurren in July-September 1892, the marriage being registered at Cuckfield, Sussex. George was born April-June 1854 at Studdle, near Deal, Kent, the son of Mary Ann & John Hurren, a farmer.

In 1901 Eliza was living at 4 Prospect Place, Grays Thurrock, Essex with 3 daughters – Dorothy Bradley (8), Edith Alice (6) & Lydia Mary (4). George’s widowed mother Mary Ann, aged 71, was living with her. At the time of the census George was aboard the training ship ‘Exmouth’, which belonged to the Metropolitan Asylums Board. The ship was anchored in tidal waters on the River Thames off Grays Thurrock & its purpose was to train young boys from poor families to become sailors – many cadets joined the Royal or Merchant Navy. George, who had been in the navy for at least 20 years, was an electrician & an officer on the ship.

Eliza died in April-June 1902, aged 38, at Grays Thurrock, Essex. There is a birth registered in the same period for Winifred Eliza Hurren at Grays Thurrock. It is possible that Eliza died after giving birth to another daughter.

The children of Eliza Alice Fry & George Hurren were:

f.2.1.1.4.2 Albert George Hurren born July-September 1893 at Grays Thurrock; died Oct-December 1893 at Grays Thurrock, Essex

f.2.1.1.4.3 Edith Alice Hurren born Jan-March 1895 at Grays Thurrock, Essex
f.2.1.1.4.4 Lydia Mary Hurren born April 27th, 1896 at Grays Thurrock, Essex
f.2.1.1.4.5 Winifred Eliza Hurren born April-June 1902 at Grays Thurrock, Essex

George remarried in Jan-March 1910, the marriage being registered in Lewisham, London. His second wife was Ethel Eliza Jewell. Ethel was born February 24th, 1874 at Winchester, Hampshire.

George & Ethel Eliza were living at 80 Cromwell Rd, Grays Thurrock in 1911 & George continue to be an electrician aboard the training ship Exmouth.

At the time of the 1911 census daughter Lydia was living with her grandmother Mary Ann Fry at Hope Cottage, Horsted Keynes. She was helping her grandmother & Aunt Harriett in their tobacconist & confectionery shop. Daughter Edith Alice was a domestic servant at a girl's school in Kensington, London at 63 Lexham Gardens. Daughter Winifred Eliza was living with her uncle, Albert Fry & his family at 129 Dorset Rd, Kennington.

In 1911 daughter Dorothy was employed as a child’s nurse for the Kramer family who had a 1 year old daughter.  The Kramer’s ran a ‘private home for nervous ladies’ at Mount Pleasant, High St, Wanstead, West Ham.  There is a record of Dorothy Hurren, aged 21 & a governess, returning to London on June 14th, 1913 from La Plata, Argentina.  This was a temporary visit as Dorothy’s future country of residence was listed as foreign.  On November 9th, 1914 Dorothy (listed as Dorothy B Hurren)  sailed from London to Buenos Aires, giving her intended country of residence as Argentina.  No occupation was given for her & she was travelling first class.

George died at 33 Abernethy Rd, Lee, Kent on January 23rd, 1919.  Administration of his estate was granted to widow Ethel Eliza & his effects were £94.12s.

The 1939 register shows Ethel Eliza still living at 33 Abernethy Rd, Lewisham.  With her was Ellen (Emily) Herridge, aged 48, a dental stock keeper for artificial teeth.
