Herbert Fry [f.2.1.1.5]

Herbert Fry was the fifth child of John Fry & Mary Ann Newbery born June 29th, 1869 at Brighton, Sussex.

In 1871 Herbert was living with his parents & brothers & sisters at 48 Jersey St, Brighton.

Herbert was still living at home in 1881 at Hope Cottage, Horsted Keynes, Sussex.

Herbert joined the Royal Navy & at the time of the census in 1891 he was an able bodied seaman aboard the HMS Excellent which was in Portsmouth Harbour on the night of the census (April 5th).

Herbert married Harriett Mary Asbury on June 2nd,1900, at St Stephen’s Canonbury, Islington.  They both gave their address as 3 Northampton St & Herbert was an electrician.  Witnesses at the wedding were Alfred William Asbury, George Hurren (Herbert’s brother-in-law), Annie Emily Asbury & A. Parker.  Harriett was born April 3rd, 1875 at Clerkenwell, Middlesex, the daughter of Mary & Alfred Asbury, a cabinet maker.  In 1891 Harriett was living with her parents in Clerkenwell & was an envelope folder.

In 1901 Herbert & Harriett were living at 219 Essex Rd, Islington & Herbert was described as an electric light wireman.

In 1911 Herbert & Harriett were still living in Islington, now at 24 River Rd, Upper Holloway. Herbert was described as looking after electric lights in a provision factory. They had had 4 children but only 2 were surviving – Eileen Olive (6) & Nora Phyllis (2).

Daughter Nora married Charles W R Gillies in July-September 1934 at Islington, a chartered accountant.

The 1939 register shows Herbert &  Harriett living at 58 Claremont Rd, Hornsey, Middlesex & Herbert was an electrical & domestic repair electrician with his own shop.  Daughter Eileen who had married Reginald C L White in 1934 was living with them & noted as divorced.

Herbert, of the above address, died at North Middlesex County Hospital, Edmonton, Middlesex on April 14th, 1943.  Probate of his estate was granted to Charles Walter Robinson Gillies, a certified accountant & his estate was £576.1s.4d.

Harriett died at 58 Claremont Rd, Highgate, Middlesex on November 22nd, 1962.  Administration of her estate was granted to daughter Eileen Olive White & her effects were valued at £2,105.8s.5d.
