Mary Ann Fry [f.2.1.3]

Mary Ann Fry was the third child of John Fry & Harriett Brooker christened May 29th, 1842 at Horsted Keynes, Sussex.

In 1851 Mary was at home with her family at Hunters (Courtland) Farm, Maresfield & in 1861 she was still at home living at Burnt Chimney, Battle.

In 1871 she was still living at home at Wind Mill, Battle at the age of 28.

In 1881 Mary was living with her brother-in-law Charles Graham Boots, a carpenter, who was the widower of Mary’s sister Harriett Fry who had died in 1880. They were living at High St, Battle along with Charles’ daughter Olive A & his sister Elizabeth A Boots, a dressmaker. Mary’s occupation was given as formerly a grocer.

Charles Boots died in 1884 & it appears that Mary Ann continued living at the Boots’  home after his death with niece Olive Boots.

In 1891 Mary at the age of 48 was still single, & was described as a lodging house keeper at 95 High St (Church House), Battle.  She was still living with her 14 year old niece, Olive A Boots. 

Mary & Olive were still living at the same address in 1901.

Mary Ann was listed in the 1905 & 1911 Kelly’s Directory of Sussex as ‘Miss Mary Ann Fry, apartments, Church House’ in Battle.

The 1911 census shows Mary Ann as a boarding house keeper at Church House, Battle. There were no boarders there at the time.

Mary died on January 12th, 1933 at Stone House Infirmary, Battle, aged 90.  Mary was of Church House, Battle & probate was granted on May 3rd, 1933 to niece Olive A Boots.  Her effects were £443.16s.7d.
