George Fry was the fourth child of John Fry & Harriett Brooker christened March 31st , 1844 at Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
In 1851 George was at home with his family at Hunters (Courtland) Farm, Maresfield & in 1861 he was still at home living at Burnt Chimney, Battle.
At the age of 30 (1871) George was still living with his widowed father John at Wind Mill, Battle. His father was a miller & grocer & Geroge & brother William were both millers. His sisters Mary Ann & Harriett were also at home.
In July- Sept 1873 George married Mary Ann Sophie Blackman at Eastbourne, Sussex. Mary was the first child of John & Jane Blackman christened on December 14th, 1845 at Catsfield, Sussex.
In 1881 George & Mary were living at the grocers shop in Wheeler St, Framfield, Sussex, next door to the Crown Inn. They had 1 son by this time, Frank Ernest aged 7. George was a grocer & draper employing an assistant - Henry Frost (16) who was living with them.
George was listed in Kelly's Directory of Sussex of 1882. He was in the Blackboys commercial directory section of Framfield & described as a grocer & draper, & agent for W. & A. Gilbey, wine & spirit merchants
George & Mary were still at the grocers shop at Framfield in 1891 & Frank was now assisting his father in the shop. Another son had been born – Augustus Frederick aged 9.
By 1901 George (listed as Fory on Ancestry.co.uk index) had retired & he & Mary were living at 28 Ceylon Rd, Eastbourne, Sussex, the head of the house being Maria Seeley, a 65 year old widow. Their son Augustus was a drapers assistant lodging with John & Rose Nash – a fruiters & greengrocer in Brighton.
George & Mary had moved to 16 Cavendish Avenue, Eastbourne by the time of the 1911 census. George was listed as a retired grocer. Living with them was son Augustus who was now a bank clerk.
Augustus married Florence May Oliphant in Oct-December 1911 at Eastbourne & they had 3 children – Bernard O, Ronald O & Margaret O.
George died on June 25th, 1929 at 11 The Avenue, Eastbourne, aged 85. He was of 16 Cavendish Avenue & probate was granted on October 1st, 1929 to widow Mary, son Augustus Frederick, bank cashier & Frederick Blackman, painter & decorator. His effects were £6057.7s.8d.
Widowed Mary died on July 6th 1933, aged 88, at the East Sussex Mental Hospital, Hellingly. Mary was of Cavendish Avenue, Eastbourne. Probate was granted on August 12th, 1933 to son Augustus Frederick Fry, bank cashier & Frederick Blackman, painter. Her effects were £3691.6s.11d & resworn as £3587.17s.3d.
