Edith Ellen Fry [f.2.1.6]
Edith Ellen Fry was the sixth child of John Fry, & the first child of his marriage to Mary Ann Waters, born Oct-Dec 1877 at Battle, Sussex.
In 1881 she was living at home at Copps Hall, Battle where her father was a grocer.
On June 13th, 1896 Edith gave birth to a daughter, Doris Ada Wenham (Fry). At the time of the birth she was living at 27 Stockleigh Rd, St Leonards on Sea, Hastings. It was noted on the birth certificate that the father was George Robert Wenham.

Edith Ellen married George Robert Wenham prior to July 28th, 1896 at Hastings, Sussex, the time of the registration of the birth of daughter Doris Ada. George was born April 12th, 1875 & christened July 11th, 1875 at Hastings, the son of Mary Ann Atkins & Thomas Wenham, a carter.
In 1901 Edith (Ethel in census) & George were living at 49 Salisbury Rd, St Mary Magdalene, Hastings with their daughter Ada (4). George was a postman.
Edith sadly died April-June 1901 at Hastings, aged just 24.

George remarried in January-March 1905 at Hastings. His second wife was Amy Eveline Pulman, born May 20th, 1883 at Driffield, E. Yorks, the daughter of Hannah & John Henry Pulman, a professor of music & organist. In 1901 Amy was living at Littlehampton, Sussex & was an apprentice milliner.
In 1911 George & Amy were living at 73 Southwater Rd, St Leonards, Hastings, Sussex & George was now described as a town postman. George's daughter Doris was listed with them & was a French embroiderer. George & Amy had a 4 year old son, Ronald Guy.
Daughter Doris Ada married Frank H Gillingham, a stock farmer, in April-June 1917 in Christchurch, Hampshire & the 1939 register shows them living with their family at Scots Craig, Clovelly Avenue, Bognor Regis, Sussex.
On his retirement in May 1934 George was presented with the Imperial Service Medal in recognition of 49 years service with the Post Office. An article in the Hastings & St Leonards Observer of August 18th, 1934 quotes George as saying ‘Hastings is the finest place to live in. You can’t beat it, and you won’t find a better or cleaner town anywhere.’ In the article he recalls having to walk nearly 20 miles a day as a messenger boy before the advent of the penny-farthing bicycle which he used on his rounds. Having lived all his life in Hastings, his address on his retirement was 45 Kenilworth Road, St Leonards.
The 1939 register shows George & Amy living at Kenilworth Rd, Hastings & George was described as a retired postman. With them was son Ronald, a builder's painter & decorator.
George died in Oct-December 1953 at Hastings, Sussex.
Amy died in Oct-December 1979 in Hastings & Rother, Sussex.
