Arthur John Fry [f.2.6.4]

Arthur John Fry was the fourth child of Samuel Fry & Sarah Smeed christened May 28th, 1848 at Ardingley.

In 1861 Arthur was living with his parents, 2 brothers & 4 sisters at Wiggs Farm, Withyham, Sussex.

Arthur was still living at home in 1871 which was now Chartners Farm, Hartfield, Sussex with his parents & brothers & sisters.

By 1881 Arthur was living with his brother Albert Edward Fry & his wife Harriet & their 2 children, Florence & Frederick Samuel, at Brookshill Farm House, Hammerwood, Hartfield. Arthur was a farmer of 117 acres employing 3 men. Living with them was niece Emily Heasman aged 14, daughter of Arthur's sister Phoebe Fry & her husband William Heasman.

Brookshill Farm, Hartfield - 2005

In 1891 Arthur was still farming at Brookshill & unmarried at the age of 43. His widowed mother Sarah (67) was living with him & there was a servant Rhoda Friend (24). Later that year Arthur married Rhoda Friend on September 2nd, 1891 at Wadhurst, Sussex.  Rhoda was only 24 & the daughter of Alice & James Friend, an agricultural labourer.  Sadly Rhoda died soon after the marriage.

At the age of 50 Arthur decided to marry again! He married Elizabeth Cox in July-Sept 1898, the marriage being registered at East Grinstead. Elizabeth was born Oct-Dec 1848 & christened January 7th, 1849 at Cowden, Kent, the daughter of James Cox & Sarah Mays [m.6]. Interestingly Arthur's brother Albert Edward Fry also married into the May family - his wife's mother was Mary Ann Mays, cousin of Elizabeth Cox!

In 1901 Arthur & Elizabeth continued to live at Brookshill Farm & with them was Elizabeth’s father James Cox, (82) a widower. They had a servant Jane Peerless (22) & an agricultural labourer James Comber (49) living with them. Arthur was still listed at Hammerwood in Kelly’s directory of 1905. James Cox lived to the age of 87, his death being recorded at East Grinstead in Jan-March 1906!

At the time of the 1911 census Arthur was living at The Lindens, Ashurst Wood, East Grinstead & was described as a farm labourer. His wife Elizabeth was visiting her sister Ellen & husband John Hambrook at the time of the census at 13 Railway Cottage, All Saints Rd, Margate, Kent.

Arthur of Sackville College, East Grinstead died on July 10th, 1925, aged 77, at East Grinstead Infirmary.  Probate was granted on August 14th, 1925 to nephew Albert Edward Fry (f.2.6.8.4), a commercial traveler.  Arthur’s effects amounted to £71.17s.6d.
