Mary May Fry [f.2.6.8.3]

Mary May Fry was the third child of Albert Edward Fry & Harriett Annie Grove born August 3rd, 1882 at Hartfield.

In 1891 Mary was living with her widowed mother Harriett with brothers & sisters at Chartners Farm, Hartfield.

In 1901 Mary was boarding with Mary Isted, a 61 year old widow at Godstone, Surrey & working as a postal clerk. Mary Isted had a daughter Mary (29) & a school teacher Jessie Blanks (20) also living with her.

Mary was still in Godstone in 1911, but now living with her cousin Emily (44) at Hamlyn, High St, Oxted, Godstone, Surrey. Emily, the daughter of Phoebe Fry [f.2.6.2] & William Heasman, had married Richard Dartnell Young, a farmer, in 1900. No occupation was given for Mary.

Mary married Ernest William Capon on July 12th, 1913 at Godstone, Surrey.  Witnesses at the wedding included Mary’s brother Fredrick Samuel, & sisters Florence Zillah & Edith Sarah.  Ernest was born Novemer 10th, 1880 at Shipmeadow, Suffolk, the son of Sarah M & Samuel Capon, master of Wangford Workhouse.    In 1911 Ernest was a commercial traveler in drapery lodging in Brighton, Sussex. 

Ernest enlisted in the army reserves in November 1915 & was posted to France in 1916 then transferred to the Labour Corps in 1917.  He served in France for two &  a half years & worked in road construction.  He was demobilized in 1919 when he gave his address as 36 Ladysmith Avenue, Seven Kings, Essex.

The 1939 Register shows that Mary & Ernest & their 2 children were living at 42 Arundel Rd, Hornchurch, Essex.  Ernest was described as a commercial traveler in furs.

Ernest died on August 26th, 1963, aged 82, at 11 Junction Rd, Romford, Essex.  Probate was granted on October 25th, 1963 to widow Mary May.  Ernest’s effects were £1,585.1s.8d..

Mary died October 2nd, 1964, aged 82, at Berwick Manor Rest Home, Rainham, Essex.   The informant of her death was daughter Anne who had married Bertram Robert Noel Lilleystone, a solicitor’s clerk.   Mary’s death certificate shows that her late husband, Ernest, was a furrier. Probate was granted on January 19th, 1965 to daughter Anne Sylvia Mary Lilleystone & her effects were £1,159.
