Louis Fry [f.3.1.11]

Louis Fry was the fourth child of William Fry & Harriett Sargent born January 8th,1873 at Battle, Sussex.

In 1881 & 1891 Louis was living at home with his family at Boyles Farm, East Grinstead, Sussex.

Louis married Clara Chesson on June 23rd,1896, the marriage being registered at St Mary’s, Wimbledon,  Surrey.
Clara was born July 26th, 1875 at Lingfield, Surrey, the daughter of Louisa & David Chesson, a butcher.

In 1901 Louis & Clara were living at Paradise Row, Edenbridge, Kent where Louis was a house painter. They had 2 children, Victoria (3) & Winnie (9 months).

Louis & Clara were still living in Edenbridge in 1911, now at 1 Lingfield Rd. Louis continued to be a decorator & was self employed. They had 5 children at home – Victoria, Winifred, Nellie (8), David (5) & Constance (3). Louis states on the 1911 census form that they had 6 children born alive, but only 5 survived.

Daughter Winifred Mary married Herbert Augustus Francis in 1926 at Edenbridge.  The bride wore a dress of white georgette & carried a bouquet of lilies & carnations.  The reception was held at her home, Mill Hill House, Edenbridge. Tragically, Herbert of Mill Hill died suddenly in 1936, aged just 37.  While sitting on a seat by a bridge sunning himself he collapsed & died.  Winifred was left a widow with a young daughter. Louis was in trouble with the law according to the Sevenoaks Chronicle & Kentish Advertiser of December 19th, 1930.  He was fined 14s for using a wireless set without a license.  He told a Post Office official who visited his house that he had a number of wireless components that he could assemble into a wireless set, but only when he had got a set going to his satisfaction would he buy a license.

Daughter Kathleen married Eric C Baldry in April-June 1930 at Sevenoaks.  The 1939 register shows them living at New Homes Havencroft, Sevenoaks & Eric was a house painter.

Son David married Margaret E G Hillier in April-June 1932 at Sevenoaks.  In 1939 they were living at 2 Sant Farm Cottage, Godstone & David was a house painter, like his father.

Son Louis married Constance L Meadows in Oct-December 1932 at Sevenoaks.  In 1939 they were living at 50 Church St, Sevenoaks where he was a painter in the building trade.

The 1939 register shows Louis & Clara living at Mill Hill House, Edenbridge, Kent.  Louis was described as a master builder & decorator.  With them were widowed daughter Winifred Francis & daughter Norah, a shop assistant.

Daughter Norah married Horace G V Bridgland, a carpenter & joiner, in July-September 1943 at Tonbridge, Kent.

Louis died on August 4th, 1955, aged 83, at Mill Hill House, Edenbridge, Kent.  Probate was granted on September 3rd, 1955 to George Victor Manwaring, auctioneer, & James Henry Clifford Brill, solicitor.  Louis’ effects were £1,438.14s.9d.

There is a death for Clara Fry, aged 88, in July-September 1962 at Tonbridge, Kent.
