Alfred Frederick Fry [f.3.1.6]

Alfred Frederick Fry was the sixth child of Anne Fry & William Fry born Jan-March 1858 at Faygate, Horsham, Sussex.

In 1861 Alfred was living with his parents & brothers & sisters at Dennetts Rd, Deptford, Greenwich.

By 1871 Alfred’s mother had died & his father had remarried. Alfred & his father & step-mother, Harriett, were living at Rat’s Farm, Netherfield, Battle with Alfred’s 2 sisters & 2 brothers & there were now also 2 half brothers & a half sister.

Alfred was still living at home in 1881 with his father & step mother at Boyle’s Farm, East Grinstead, along with 2 step sisters & 2 step brothers. Alfred was employed as an agricultural labourer.

Alfred married Sophia Trussler in July-September 1889, the marriage being registered at East Grinstead. Sophia was born c1850 at Little Warley, Essex, the daughter of Sophia & Thomas Trussler, a gardener.

In 1891 Alfred & Sophia (Fay in Ancestry.co.uk index) were living at Down Park Farm, Worth, East Grinstead. Alfred was a farm bailiff. With them at the time of the census was Sophia’s niece Annie Sophia Trussler, aged 16.

By 1901 Alfred & Sophia had moved to Woodcote Park Farm, Epsom, Surrey where Alfred worked as a farm bailiff. It appears that they had no children.

Sophia died on April 23rd, 1903, aged 53, at Woodcote Park Farm, Epsom, Surrey.  On May 22nd, 1903 Alfred was granted administration of Sophia’s will & her effects were £109.19s.5d.

Alfred remarried in Jan-March 1905 at Epsom. His second wife was Anne Jane Ottaway, born July-September 1860, the daughter of Matilda Bennett, a laundress & James Ottaway, a gardener/laundryman. In 1901 the Ottaways were close neighbours of Alfred & his first wife, Sophia at Woodcote, Epsom. At that time Anne was living at home & described as a laundress.

In 1911 Alfred & Anne were living at The Farm, Woodcote Park, Epsom & Alfred continued to be a farm bailiff. Anne's 74 year old widowed mother Matilda Ottaway was living with them.

Alfred died on January 1st, 1929 at Woodcote-side, Epsom.  His will was administered on June 27th, 1929 by his widow Anne & his effects were £243.12s.3d.

Widowed Anne married again in 1930.  Her second husband was George Edwards.
The 1939 register shows Anne to be widowed & living at The White Cottage, 12 Woodcote-side, Epsom. George had died on December 18th, 1936 at Middle House, Dorking Rd, Epsom.

Anne of 12 Woodcote-side died aged 94 on April 15th, 1955 at 49 Dorking Rd, Epsom.  Probate was granted to James Charles Ottaway, retired gardener, & Ena May Horsman, spinster & her effects were £3,746.0s.5d.
