Agnes Amelia Fry [f.3.1.9]

Agnes Amelia Fry was the second child of William Fry & Harriett Sargent born July-September 1868 at Netherfield, Battle, Sussex.

In 1871 Agnes was living with her parents, brothers & sisters & step brothers & sisters at Rats Farm, Netherfield, Battle.

In 1881 & 1891 Agnes was still at home with her family now at Boyles Farm, East Grinstead, Sussex.

Agnes married Albert Smeed [sm.10.4] on May 13th, 1892, at St Swithun's, East Grinstead. Witnesses at the wedding were Evelyn Elsie Smeed, Albert’s sister, & her future husband, William R Grayling. Albert was born September 2nd 1868 at East Grinstead, the son of Ellen Lindfield & Charles Smeed [sm.10], a farmer of Hoskins Farm, East Grinstead. Albert & Agnes were related through Matilda Fry [f.3.2] as she was Albert's maternal grandmother & Agnes' aunt.

A report in the Kent & Sussex Courier of August 24th, 1900 shows that Agnes Amelia brought a case against Edgar Norman for making threats towards her.  She stated in the East Grinstead Police Court that whilst talking to the defendant outside her home one evening, he had threatened ‘to do for her in the morning’.  She stated that the defendant had assaulted her because she had asked him not to visit the house when her husband was there.  Albert corroborated her evidence.  The defendant stated that he had gone to the house for Sunday dinner for 4 years & frequently supplied the vegetables.  He said that Agnes had wanted him to go for a walk with him on the evening in question & when he refused she said she would make him pay for it.  He denied using threats & thought that having taken her a trout that morning was not the act of someone wishing to do her harm.  The case was dismissed!

In 1901 Agnes & Albert were living at 59 Queen’s Rd, East Grinstead & Albert was described as a farmer’s son.

Agnes & Albert were still living in East Grinstead in 1911, now at Mount Noddy Cottage. Albert was now a carman & contractor. It appears that they had no children.

It would appear that Agnes was involved with the law again in 1924.  She was charged with sending an indecent postcard to a Miss Florence Emily Steer, dressmaker, in March of that year.  The prosecution was brought on behalf of the post office & the prosecutor for their case believed the motive behind the action was jealousy.  When asked if she wanted to question Miss Steer, Agnes stated that ‘I don’t want to look at her or speak to her’.  Agnes was fined £5 plus costs & allowed a month for payment. (Kent & Sussex Courier, June 20th, 1924)

The 1939 register shows Albert, listed as married, living alone at Mount Noddy & described as a farmer.

Agnes died on March 1st, 1940 at 98 Railway Approach, East Grinstead.  Agnes was stated to be of The Red Lion, Turners Hill, Sussex & probate was granted to Henry Hilman, licensed victualler on March 18th, 1940.  Her effects were £245.2s.1d.

Albert died, aged 76,  on September 22nd, 1944, at Mount Noddy Cottage, East Grinstead.  Administration of his will was granted on December 22nd, 1944 to sister Emma Anna Smeed, spinster.  Albert’s effects were £137.6s.9d.
