Ellen Grove [g.6.8]

Ellen Grove was the eighth child of Henry William Grove & Mary Ann Mays born February 9th, 1866 & christened November 3rd, 1867 at St John the Baptist, Croydon, Surrey.

In 1871she was at home with her parents in Croydon.

Ellen & her parents together with sisters  Louisa & Eliza & brother George, all emigrated to Sydney, Australia on the ship ‘Samuel Plimsoll’ arriving in Sydney on December 16th, 1874.

Ellen (known as Nellie) married Harry Chester Butterfield in 1888 in Sydney.  Harry was born in 1864 in Balmain, the son of Martha & Thomas Butterfield.  When Harry was only 8 years old he witnessed a tragedy.  According to the Sydney Morning Herald of December 3rd, 1872, he & his 5 year old friend Albert Arthur Edwards were playing throwing stones into a pond & his friend, attempting to throw a hatful of stones, fell into the pond & drowned.

In October 1893 Harry, a commission agent, underwent bankruptcy proceedings according to The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser.  His address at this time was Ferndale, Denison St, Woollahra.  In November 1893 the Sydney Morning Herald revealed that Harry was allowed to keep his household furniture subject to the payment of a debt.

In 1913 Ellen & Harry, a clerk, were living at 6 Kepos St, Redfern, Sydney.  With them were sons Eric Sydney, a clerk, & Norman Grove, an electrician.

Son Norman Grove married Ivy M Timbrell in 1913 & son Herbert married Annie G McKeown in 1924, both marriages taking place in Sydney.

Ellen & Harry were still living at 6 Kepos St in 1930 & Harry was still a clerk.

Harry died in 1936, aged 71, in Redfern, Sydney & was buried on February 17th at the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park Cemetery in the Presbyterian section.

The 1936 electoral register shows widowed Ellen still at 6 Kepos St & with her were son Eric Sydney, a labourer, & his wife Elsie.  The 3 were still living together at the same address in 1949.

Ellen died in 1951, aged 85, her death being registered in Randwick, NSW & was buried on March 14th at the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park Cemetery in the Presbyterian section.
