Frederick William Grove [g.8.1]

Frederick Grove was the first child of William Grove & Sarah Abbott  born November 15th, 1854 at 47 Whiskin St, Clerkenwell, Middlesex.

Frederick’s mother died before 1860 when his father remarried.  His step-mother was Emma Elizabeth Groves.

He was living with his father & step-mother at Mile End Old Town, Stepney in 1861.

In 1871 Frederick (Guse in Ancestry.co.uk index!) was still living at home at 2 South Grove. He was a telegraph clerk for the GPO.

Frederick married Lizzie Bletsoe Hall on November 5th, 1876 at St Thomas’, Bethnal Green, London.  Frederick, a clerk, was 22  & gave his address as 6 Archibald St. Witnesses at the wedding were William Hall & Abigail Rogers. Lizzie was 19 & was born Jan-March 1857 at St Neots, Hutingdonshire, the daughter of Emma Thornton & William Hall, a greengrocer. Lizzie’s middle name derived from her great grandmother, Keziah Bletso.

At the time of the birth of their first son Ernest, Frederick & Lizzie were living at Columbia Market, Tower Hamlets.

In 1881 Frederick & Lizzie were living at 184 Barnet Grove, Bethnal Green, London. Frederick was a telegraph clerk. They had 2 sons – Ernest Frederick (3) & Albert Victor (8 months).

In 1891 Frederick & Elizabeth (Guve in Ancestry.co.uk index) were living at 83 Caistor Park Rd, West Ham, Essex & Frederick was still a telegraph clerk. They now had 4 children – Ernest, Albert, Ethel (8) & Daisy (2).

The family (Grover in Ancestry co.uk index) had moved to 37 Thorngrove Rd, West Ham by 1901 & Frederick was described as a telegraphist, civil service. At home were Albert, a ledger clerk at the timber yard, Ethel, a show room assistant at a fancy goods shop, Daisy A & Florence M (7). In Oct-Dec 1900 Ernest had married Rose Anna Barfield, born Oct-Dec 1875 at Bramford, Suffolk. In 1901 Ernest was an export packer & they were living at East Ham, London.

There is a death registered for Frederick William Grove, aged 55, in April-June 1910 at West Ham.

In 1911 widowed Lizzie was living with son Albert Victor & his family at 22 Lancaster Rd, Forest Gate, West Ham.  Albert, a commercial clerk for a confectionery manufacturer, had married May Charlotte Goodall in 1906 at West Ham.  By 1911 Albert & May had 2 daughters – Hilda Agnes May (3) & Winifred Alexandra (1).  Albert’s sister Florence Maud was also living with them. The 1939 register shows Albert & May living at 1 Green St, East Ham where Albert was a registered port worker, tally clerk.  With them was daughter Hilda & another daughter Olive L (born 1917), both dressmakers.

In 1911 son Ernest & his wife Rose were living at 51 Chaney Rd, Leytonstone, West Ham with their 5 year old daughter Rosetta.  Ernest was an export packer for a shipping agent. Ernest was still employed as an export packer in 1939 when he & wife Rose & daughter Rosetta were living in Guildford, Surrey.

Daughter Ethel had married John Edward van der Heede in 1905 & they were living at 74 Lancaster Rd, West Ham in 1911.  John was a sugar boiler at the confectionery works & they had a 4 year old daughter, Dorothy, & 2 sons - John (2) & Leslie (1).

Daughter Daisy was working as a domestic housemaid in 1911 for Alfred Portsmouth, a solicitor’s managing clerk, & his family, at Semaphore Rd, Guildford, Surrey. The next year Daisy married William Henry Bird, a policeman, on July 24th, 1912 at St Mary the Virgin, Shalford, Surrey. The 1939 register shows Henry & Daisy living at 24 Boxgrove Avenue, Guildford, Surrey & Henry was now the Deputy Chief Constable of Surrey. Daisy died the following year in July 1940 after an illness of 2 years according to the Surrey Advertiser of July 27th, 1940.  It was mentioned that Daisy had been a good bowls player, having won some competitions.  She had had 3 sons & a daughter.

There is an entry for Lizzie B Grove in the settlement papers of the Hackney Union showing that she was ‘removed’ to the West Ham Union on October 30th, 1914.          

Lizzie died in Oct-December 1920, aged 63, her death being registered at West Ham.

g.8.1.4 Daisy Adeline Grove born June 23rd, 1888 at 135 Caistor Park Rd, West Ham, & christened July 22nd, 1888 at St Thomas, Bethnal Green; died July 1940 at Cavendish, Boxgrove Avenue, Guildford
