Emma Sarah Grove [g.8.3]

Emma Sarah Grove was the second child of William Grove & Emma Elizabeth born November 21st, 1861 at 2 South Grove, Mile End Old Town, Stepney & christened December 22nd, 1861 at Holy Trinity, Mile End Old Town.

In 1871 Emma was living at the District Asylum for the Deaf & Dumb, Kent Road, St George the Martyr, Southwark. She & her sister Annie Jane were described as scholars.

In 1881 Emma was at home with her parents & older sister Annie at Albion St, Mile End Old Town, where she was a waistcoat maker. It was noted in the census that she was deaf & dumb, as was her sister.

In 1891 she was still at home with her parents at Mile End. Her sister Annie, (now Worcester) & son were visiting.

On December 25th, 1894 Emma married James Sanderson at St Philip’s,  Stepney.  James (34), a marble polisher, was also deaf & dumb, & gave his address as 22 College Buildings, Wentworth St.  He was born Jan-March 1860 at Spitalfields, London son of John Sanderson.  Emma (32) gave her address as 41 Tree St & her father William’s occupation was then a florist.  Witnesses at the wedding were William Grove & Carrie Worcester.

In 1901 they were living at Meadows Dwelling, Bethnal Green with their 5 year old son Albert James, who was not recorded as deaf & dumb. Emma was a vest maker. Later that year Emma gave birth to twins, Frederick Charles & Sidney Arthur at 28 College Buildings, Whitechapel.  Sadly Sidney only survived until 1902.

In November 1906 James entered the Stepney Workhouse, Tower Hamlets, the cause of his admission was varicose veins.  Sadly a record in Stepney Workhouse shows James, a marble polisher, admitted again on May 5th, 1909, the cause being ‘destitute’.  On May 22nd 1909 Emma of 24 College Buildings was also admitted to the Workhouse with children Frederick Charles & Lily May, again the cause being ‘destitute’.  James left the Workhouse late in June & Emma early in July

In 1911 Emma & James were living at 26 Goodmans Yard, Whitechapel, London & James was still a marble polisher.  With them were son Fred (9) & daughter Lily (4).  It was noted on the census that Emma & James had had 4 children, only 2 of whom were still alive.

James of 26 Goodmans Yard Minories died on May 5th, 1924 at St Peter’s Hospital, Vallance Road, Whitechapel.  Administration of his estate was granted to son Albert James, a packer, & his effects were £238.4s.

Emma died, aged 67, in Jan-March 1929, her death being registered at Stepney.

The electoral registers of 1930 & 1931 show daughter Lily May living with her brother Frederick Charles in Aston St, Stepney.

Son Albert was living alone, but noted as married, at the time of the 1939 register.  He was a packer of glass instruments living at 11 Gilstead St, Fulham. He had married Rosina Jane Brown in 1924 in Fulham.
