Enoch Horton was the eighth child of William Horton & Elizabeth Hale born August 15th, 1873 & christened October 15th, 1873 at Lower Gornall, Sedgley, Staffs.
In 1881 Enoch was living with his mother & father at Graveyard, Lower Gornall, Sedgley.
Enoch was still living with his parents in 1891, at Sandfield Bridge, Pensnett, Kingswinford, Staffs. His occupation was given as a carter.
Enoch married Eliza Maud Dunn in Jan-March 1897 at Dudley Register Office. Eliza was born October 11th, 1871 at Dudley, Worcs, the daughter of Ann (Nellie) & David Dunn, an engine fitter.
In 1901 Enoch & Eliza were living at 20 High St, Pensnett, Kingswinford, Staffs where Enoch was a hay & straw dealer with his own account. They had a 2 year old 'son' Frank. It appears that Enoch & Eliza had no children of their own. We believe that Frank was in fact the son of Enoch’s sister, Eliza Jane [h.1.4.3.6] & her husband James George Hickman. Frank was christened George Hickman on January 18th, 1899 at Kingswinford when his birth date was given as December 26th, 1898. (See below)
Enoch & Eliza were living at 13 Holland St, Dudley in 1911 & Enoch was described as a haulier with his own account. 'Son' Frank was still at home.
Frank enlisted on September 21st, 1916 in the Worcester Regiment. Prior to his enlistment he worked as a tin plater for John Thompson, boiler maker, of Dudley. For some time he worked as a cook in the army. He served in France, but in October 1918 a gas shell exploded near him causing burns & affecting his eyes & lungs. He was hospitalised in Rouen on October 29th,1918 & subsequently transferred to hospital in Plymouth, where he remained until February 1919. Frank re-enlisted in the Territorial branch of the Worcester regiment on July 26th, 1920 & served with them until 1925, achieving the rank of lance corporal. Frank's records during this time reveal that his birth date was December 26th, 1898 &, on a number of occasions he gave his name as George Frank Hickman Horton. Frank married Emily May Knowles in 1930 in Dudley.
Eliza died on October 20th, 1934 & was buried in Dudley Cemetery.
The 1939 register shows widowed Enoch still living at 13 Holland St & described as a scrap dealer.
Enoch died on December 19th, 1940, aged 67, at 13 Holland St, Dudley. Probate was granted on January 22nd, 1941 at Llandudno to son George Frank Horton, tin plate worker. His effects were £564.5s.9d.
