Elizabeth Horton [h.1.4.9]

Elizabeth Horton was the ninth child of James Horton & Elizabeth Hale christened August 23rd, 1849 at Gornalwood, Sedgley, Staffs.

In 1851 Elizabeth & her parents were living at Gornall Wood, Lower Gornall, Sedgley.  There were 3 brothers & 1 sister at home.

By 1861 the family had moved to Himley Rd, Lower Gornall, Sedgley.  At home with Elizabeth & her parents were 2 older brothers, John & Joseph, both working as labourers, a younger brother, Samuel (8), & a younger sister, Sarah (5).

In 1871 Elizabeth had left home & was working as a general domestic servant for Sarah & Edward William Agard, an American merchant.  They were living at 86 Bristol Rd, Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Elizabeth, of Bristol Rd, Birmingham, married Thomas Blogg on September 21st, 1874 at St Jude’s, Birmingham.  Thomas was a bedstead maker & witnesses at the wedding were Elizabeth’s brother John Horton & his wife Emma.  Thomas was christened on April 6th, 1851 at St Thomas’, Birmingham, the son of Lucy Coley & Thomas Blogg, a journeyman shoemaker & painter.  Elizabeth’s father was described as a shoemaker on the wedding certificate.
In 1881 Elizabeth & Thomas were living at 10C 1H Lee Bank Rd, Edgbaston, Birmingham with their 2 year old daughter, Virginia.  Thomas was described as a brass caster.

Elizabeth & Thomas were still living in Edgaston in 1891 & now had 3 more children as well as Virginia – Ernest A (7), Maude S (5) & Howard A (1).  Thomas was now an iron caster.

In 1901 the family were still living in Upper Ryland Rd, Edgbaston & Thomas was still working as an iron caster.  At home were Virginia, a lacquerer, Ernest, a glass beveller & Maud, a gold leaf cutter.

By 1911 Elizabeth & Thomas had moved to 79 Grant St, Birmingham & Thomas continued to be an iron caster.  Daughters Virginia & Maud were still at home & had the same jobs as last census.  It was noted on the census that Elizabeth had had 5 children, only 3 of whom were still alive.

Son Ernest emigrated to Quebec, Canada in September 1908.

Daughter Virginia married widower Alfred Harry Jenkins (aged 27), a cane worker, in 1913 in Birmingham.  The 1939 register shows Virginia & 3 children living in Birmingham but Alfred is not present.

Daughter Maude married Edward Kelly in 1915 in Birmingham & in 1939 they & their family were living in Birmingham where Edward was a temporary postman.

Elizabeth, aged 76, died in July-September 1925 at Birmingham South.

Thomas, aged 80, died in Jan-March 1931 at Birmingham North.

h.1.4.9.3  Ernest Augustus Blogg born April 6th, 1884 in Edgbaston; died February 27th, 1959 in Vancouver, Canada
h.1.4.9.4  Maude Louise Blogg christened April 3rd, 1887 in the parish of Harborne; died October 27th, 1968 in Quinton, Birmingham
h.1.4.9.5  Howard Austin Blogg born April-June 1889 in Edgbaston; died Oct-December 1895 in Edgbaston
