Joseph Stainsby was the fourth child of William Stainsby & Adah Stephenson born in York & christened March 23rd, 1856 at Saint Mary Bishophill Junior, York.
Joseph was living at 59 Price St, York in 1871 with his widowed father, brothers & sister & grandmother Elizabeth Stainsby (92). Joseph was now a smith.
In 1876 Joseph joined the Royal Artillery & gave his occupation as striker & address as 59 Price St, York. His career as a gunner was brief as he was discharged as being unfit for service at Woolwich on January 18th, 1878. The medical reason for his discharge was ‘palpitation of the heart’. His intended address was again 59 Price St & his next of kin was father William.
By 1881 his father had remarried & Joseph was living with his father & step-mother Esther at Price St, York. Joseph was employed as an engine cleaner.
Joseph died on January 18th 1883, aged 26, at 47 Victoria St, York.
