Nellie Stainsby was the third child of William Stainsby & Jane Stephenson born June 25th, 1880 at 10 Benson St, Linthorpe & christened July 15th, 1880 at Linthorpe.
In 1881 Nellie was living at Benson St, Linthorpe with her parents, brother Thomas & sister Edith.
In 1891 Nellie was still living at home at Newport Rd, Middlesbrough. As well as Thomas & Edith also at home were children Joseph (8), Mary E (6), George (4) & John (1).
In 1901 Nellie was still at home at 3 Leechmere Rd, Grangetown & was working as a finisher in the papermill.
On June 27th, 1903 Nellie married Ernest Frederick Hodgetts at St Paul’s, Ryhope. At the time of the wedding Nellie was still living at 3 Leechmere Rd & Ernest’s address was 1 Leechmere Rd. Ernest was born June 7th, 1875 at Dudley son of Elizabeth & Richard Hodgetts of Dudley, Worcs, a fitter. Witnesses at the wedding were Edward Hodgetts, Ernest's younger brother, & Mary Emily Stainsby, Nellie’s younger sister.
Ernest was a cabinet maker & by 1905 he & Nellie were living in Grangetown at 8 Leechmere Rd, one of the houses built by her father.
By 1909 Nellie & Ernest were living at 3 Royle St, Grangetown & remained there until Nellie’s death in 1936. The 1911 census shows that they were still at 3 Royle St & that Ernest was a joiner at the Hendon paper works. They had 2 daughters – Nellie (5) & Edith (1).
Daughter Nellie married Arthur Stamp Cooper in 1927 & daughter Edith married John Smiles in 1932.
Nellie died April 16th, 1936, aged 55 & was buried at St Aidan’s, Grangetown, Co. Durham.
Ernest was still living at 3 Royle St in 1937 according to Ward’s directory of Sunderland, when he was still working as a joiner.
The 1939 register shows Ernest living with his daughter Nellie & husband Arthur Cooper & family at 27 Leechmere Rd, Grangetown. Ernest was a builder’s joiner.
Ernest died January 24th, 1964, aged 88 & was buried alongside his wife at St Aidan’s, Grangetown.
