Joseph Stainsby was the fourth child of William Stainsby & Jane Stephenson was born at 10 Benson St, Linthorpe in 1882 & christened June 25th, 1882 at Linthorpe.
In 1891 Joseph was living at home at Newport Rd, Middlesbrough. Also at home were children Thomas (14), Edith (12), Nellie (10), Mary E (6), George (4) & John (1).
In 1901 Joseph was still at home at 3 Leechmere Rd, Ryhope & was working as a bricklayer’s apprentice.
Joseph married Elizabeth Agnes Geddis in Jan-March, 1909 at Sunderland. Elizabeth was born Jan-March 1885 at Sunderland. At the time of the 1901 census she was living at home with her parents Jane & Archibald Geddis, a shoe maker, & brothers & sisters at 45 Windsor Terrace, Grangetown. She was working as a stocking knitter at this time.
Their short married life was spent at 11 Oxford Rd, Grangetown. Joseph, a bricklayer, sadly died on October 27th, 1910, aged 28, & was
buried at St Aidan's cemetery, Grangetown. The following inscription is on
the headstone of his parents grave.

In 1911 widowed Elizabeth was living at her mother Jane’s home at 13 Oxford St. There were 2 of Elizabeth’s younger sisters & a younger brother still at home. Joseph & Elizabeth had had 1 daughter before his death. This was Jennie, who was aged 1 year on the census.

Elizabeth continued to live at Oxford St, Grangetown until at least 1918.
In July-September 1927 Elizabeth married for the second time. Her new husband was her brother-in-law Joseph Willey, the widower of Edith Stainsby [sb.6.5.2], who was the sister of her late husband Joseph.
Daughter Jennie married John Robert Groundon, a grocer, on August 20th, 1932 at St Paul’s, Ryhope. A witness at Jennie’s wedding was her cousin, Freda Mary Earnshaw. At the time of her marriage Jennie’s address was given as Willow Farm, Ryhope, the home of her step-father Joseph Willey. Jennie was the executor of her step-father Joseph’s estate on his death in 1941.
