Jane Stainsby was the first child of Robert Stainsby & Elizabeth Brewer born at Great Barugh, & christened Jane Brewer on October 11th, 1842 at Kirby Misperton, Yorks, the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth.
In 1851 Jane was living with her parents & brothers & sisters at Westgate, Pickering.
In 1861 Jane was working as a kitchen maid for Charles & Amelia Cator at the Parish Church Rectory, Stokesley. Charles Cator (74) was the rector of Stokesley. Also on the staff was a housekeeper Margaret Brewer, aged 37, who was Jane’s aunt, the sister of Elizabeth Brewer.
By 1871 Jane had moved to Bilton, nr Wetherby & was now an upper house maid for a clergyman Christopher W Wilkinson (75) & his wife Louise. Also employed in the household was Henry Goodfellow (32) a footman born in Wiltshire.
Jane died on June 24th, 1879, aged 36, & was buried at All Saints Church,
Hovingham. Inscribed on her memorial are the words ‘This stone was
erected by her friend Henry Goodfellow’.
