Joseph Stainsby [sb.9.11]

Joseph Stainsby was the eleventh child of Robert Stainsby & Elizabeth Brewer born January 18th, 1860 at Fryton, Yorks.

In 1871 Joseph was living at home with his parents, brother & sisters at the Gate House, Fryton.

By 1881 Joseph was working for farmer George Wray, a 40 year old farmer of 360 acres. He was employed as a waggoner at East Newton Hall farm, East Newton, south of Helmsley, Yorks.

Soon after the census Joseph married Alice Dale. At the time of the census Alice was working as a domestic cook at a farm near East Newton.  They were married on June 25th, 1881 at Stonegrave, Yorks.   Witnesses at the wedding were Ralph Dale & Susannah Stainsby, Joseph’s sister.  Alice was born August 30th, 1859 at East Newton, the daughter of  Jane & Ralph Dale, a carrier & poultry dealer.

By 1891 Joseph & Alice were living at Ryegate, Helmsley where Joseph was now a railway porter. They had 4 children – Henry (7), Ralph (6), Jane E (2) & Margaret L (6 months).

Alice died on September 23rd, 1900, aged 41, at Ryegate, Helmsley, two days after giving birth to John William. She was buried on September 28th at All Saints, Helmsley.

In 1901 widowed Joseph was still living at Ryegate & he was still in the same occupation. Daughters Jane & Margaret (known as Maggie) were still at home & there had been 4 more children born before the death of Alice – Joseph E (7), Alice C, known as Cissy (4), Mary A, known as Nancy (1), & John W (6 months). There was a 61 year old housekeeper Hannah Bauch living with them.

Joseph remarried on April 18th, 1908, at St George’s Leeds.   His new wife was Rose Ada Pullan who was born Oct-December 1876 at Tadcaster, West Yorkshire, the daughter of Eliza & George Pullan, a gardener. At the time of the 1901 census Rose was working as a general servant for the railway station master at Helmsley, William Wilson & living at the Station House in Pottergate.

At the time of the 1911 census Joseph & Rose were still living at Ryegate, Helmsley & Joseph was now described as a carting agent for the North Eastern Railway. Children with them were Mary Annie, John William, both at school & a new daughter, Rose Eva (1).

Son Harry had married Eleanor Maud Kilvington in 1909 & at the time of the 1911 census they were living at Smardale, Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland where Harry was a signalman for the North East Railway Co.

Son Ralph was boarding with the Dobby family in Starbeck, Harrogate, Yorks in 1911 & he was a railway porter for the North Eastern Railway. Son Joseph Ernest, listed as Ernest, was working as a farm labourer for farmer Thomas W Jefferson at Beacon House, Ampleforth, Yorks.

In 1911 daughter Margaret was employed as a kitchen maid at the home of Mr Boyd Carpenter at Pendrea, Penzance, Cornwall.  Margaret was to marry Oswald Towler in 1915 at Helmsley.  Margaret’s sister Alice Cecilia was also working as a domestic servant but still in Helmsley & sister Jane was a domestic servant for the Ingham family at Langcliffe Mills, Settle, Yorks. Alice Cecilia was to marry George Wilson on December 22nd, 1925 at Barnet, Middlesex.

Daughter Jane married Lawrence Gallagher in 1915 in Settle, Yorks.

Joseph died, aged 61, & was buried January 7th, 1922 at Helmsley.

Joseph’s daughter Mary Annie never married & at the time of the 1939 register she was at the Torbay Court Hotel, Torquay, Devon & described as ‘paid domestic duties’.

Daughter Rose Eva married Ernest E Beeforth in Oct-December 1935 at Guisborough, N. Yorks.

The 1939 register shows widowed Rose Ada living on her own at Ryegate, Helmsley.  Living nearby in Ryegate was daughter Rose Eva & husband Ernest Beeforth, a shopkeeper & grocer.

Rose Ada died, aged 75, & was buried July 16th, 1951 at Helmsley, N. Yorks.
