Louisa Stainsby [sb.9.2.1]

Louisa Stainsby was the daughter of Margaret Stainsby born September 22nd,1866 at Fryton, Yorks & christened August 23rd, 1874 at Hovingham. Yorks. Louisa, aged 7, was christened on the same day as her cousin Frederick Stainsby, son of  Margaret’s brother William Stainsby.

At the time of the 1871 census Louisa was with Margaret’s parents, Elizabeth & Robert Stainsby, at Gate House, Fryton & listed as their daughter.

In 1881 Louisa was still at Gate House but now listed as granddaughter to Elizabeth & Robert. Louisa’s mother Margaret was employed as a cook by the Tatham family who lived in Springfield Mount, Leeds at the time of both 1871 & 1881 censuses.

Louisa was working as a kitchen maid at the Mansion, Scarborough in 1891. This was the home of Charles Woodall, a banker & J.P.

On April 7th, 1896 Louisa married Herbert Payne Dawson Grantham at Slingsby, Yorks.  Herbert of Scarborough gave his occupation as master mariner & witnesses at the wedding were Louisa’s aunt & uncle, Cecilia & Henry Stainsby.  Interestingly Louisa gave her father as Robert Stainsby, plate layer.  Herbert was born Jan-March 1852 at Burgh-le-Marsh, Spilsby, Lincs, the son of Payne Grantham, a surveyor & apothecary. Herbert had previously married Annie Watson in 1877. Annie died February 13th, 1891.

In 1901 Louisa & Herbert were living at 55 Gordon St, Scarborough. Herbert was deputy harbour master there. Living with them was Herbert Grantham, aged 22, a gas fitter. This was a son of Herbert’s first marriage. Herbert senior & Louisa now had a daughter Beryl, aged 4. Also with them was a nephew, Vernon Hagyard (19), a cabinet maker.

Herbert, a master mariner, died on April 7th, 1906, aged 54, at 58 Grodon St, Scarborough.  Probate was granted in York on August 22nd, 1906 to widow Louisa.  His effects were £722.1s.7d.

In 1911 widowed Louisa was still living at 58 Gordon St with her daughter Beryl who was at school.  Boarding with them was John Richard Simpson, a grocer’s assistant.

Louisa was a co-executor of her mother's will in 1918.

Daughter Beryl married Claude H Horsley in 1922 at Scarborough & at the time of the 1939 register they were living at 46 Mabfield Rd, Manchester & Claude was soft furnishings estimator & salesman.  With them was Beryl’s mother Louisa Grantham, listed as single.

Louisa died aged 83 in 1950 & was buried on January 9th, 1950 at Southern Cemetery, Manchester.
