Robert Stainsby was the ninth child of Robert Stainsby & Elizabeth Brewer born May 5th, 1857 at Fryton, Yorks.
In 1861 Robert was living at home with his parents at the Gate House, Fryton, Yorks.
By 1871 Robert was working at the age of 13 as a groom for George Leefe, a farmer of 330 acres at Fryton & living with the Leefe family. Living next door was his younger brother John who was working as an errand boy for farmer Elizabeth Isherwood.
By 1881 Robert had moved to Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield where he was one of two under gardeners/domestic servants living in the household of James Keeling, a 40 year old head gardener & his family.
Robert married Annie Jones on March 13th, 1882 at St Silas, Broomhall, Sheffield. At the time of the marriage Robert was a gardener. Annie was the daughter of Agnes & Stephen Jones, a pen blade forger, who was born c1860 at Sheffield.
In 1891 Robert & Annie were living at 1 Rawson Rd, Rotherham. Robert was now a police constable & he & Annie had 3 children – Jane (7), William H (5) & Edith (3).
In 1901 Robert & Annie were still living in Rotherham at 21 St Stephens Rd, & Robert was still a policeman. Their 3 children were still at home & Jane was now a dressmaker & William was a clerk.
Robert was living with his daughter Edith & her husband Walter Hinchliffe, a railway clerk, & their son John (1) in 1911 at 24 Grosvenor Rd, Rotherham. Robert was now described as a police pensioner & a hotel waiter & still listed as married. His wife Annie was lodging with Ellen Fieldsend, a grocer, at 1 Peel St, Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield & her son William Fieldsend, a chauffeur (taxi driver). Annie was described as married & her occupation was a charwoman.
Daughter Jane had married Alfred Hollingsworth in 1909 at Rotherham & in 1911 they were living at 8 Hardwick Rd, Eastwood, Rotherham. Alfred (33) was described as a basic slag grinder. His brother Jack (22), a colliery labourer, was living with them.
Son William Henry had married Sarah Ann Brown in 1909 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire & in 1911 they were living at St Johns Square, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield. William was a wagon builder & they had 2 children – Edith (2) & Robert (under 1 month).
The 1939 register shows Robert living with his daughter Jane at 24 Garden St, Rotherham. He was a retired police constable. Head of the household was Harold Johnson, a general metal broker.
Robert died aged 83 at 24 Garden St, & was buried on December 10th, 1940 at St Thomas, Kimberworth, Rotherham.
