Jacob Speed was the fifth child of Robert Speed & Margaret Curry christened October 2nd, 1784 at Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.
Jacob lived at Fatfield & became a pitman like his father.
In 1808 Jacob married Margaret Gills/Coles on July 24th at Chester-le-Street. A witness at the wedding was Rachel Leconby & both Jacob & Margaret were of the parish. Margaret was born at Wapping, Co Durham & christened October 3rd, 1784 at All Saints, Penshaw, the daughter of Anne & Richard Gill.
In 1841 Jacob & Margaret were living at Easington Lane, Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham where Jacob was a coal miner. With them was 15 year old Thomas Kelsey who was also a miner.
Jacob died on January 16th, 1850 at Easington Lane aged 66 & was buried at St Nicholas, Hetton-le-Hole on January 19th.
Widowed Margaret was living at Brick Garth, Hetton-le-Hole in 1851 & described as a pauper.
In 1861 Margaret was living alone at Brick Garth, Hetton-le-Hole. She died later that year & was also buried at St Nicholas, Hetton-le-Hole on October 6th.
