Margaret Speed was the fourth child of Ralph Speed & Anne Robinson born at Fatfield & christened February 23rd, 1785 at Chester-le-Street, Co Durham
Margaret’s father Ralph was a pitman of Fatfield.
Margaret married Robert Pallister on August 23rd, 1807 at Chester-le-Street after the calling of banns. Witnesses at the wedding were Robert’s sister, Hannah Pallister, & William Pybus. Both Robert & Margaret were recorded of the parish of Chester-le-Street. Robert was the first child of William Pallister & Isabella Blackburn born at Ousterly & christened April 23rd, 1786 at All Saints, Lanchester, Co. Durham.
At the time of the birth of their first child, Ralph Speed, Robert & Margaret were living at Ouston, nr Chester-le-Street & Robert was a pitman.
Their third child, Isabella was christened at Washington in 1812 & by 1814 they had moved to Killingworth Colliery, Longbenton, Northumberland where Robert worked as a pitman. It was here that their next daughter Ann was born who sadly died aged 1.
In 1820 a new mine was opened at Burradon by Lord Ravensworth & partners. This was just 25-30 minutes walk from Killingworth Colliery & Robert went to work there.
Robert, listed as age 38, was killed in an accident at Burradon Colliery, Northumberland in October 1821. He & 2 other men were killed when a rope broke. Robert, who was of Killingworth Colliery, was buried on October 22nd, 1821 at Longbenton.
Widow Margaret was still living at Killingworth Colliery, Longbenton, Newcastle in 1841. She was described as independent. Living with her was son William Pallister, aged 30, a hewer at the colliery.
Margaret died aged 54 & was buried September 19th, 1842 at St Bartholomew, Longbenton, Northumberland.
