Mary Speed [sp.]

Mary Speed was the second child of William Speed & Jane Heaviside born at Fatfield & christened June 18th, 1786 at Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.

Mary’s father William was a pitman of Fatfield.

On May 8th, 1810 Mary married Jasper Thornton at Lamesley, Co Durham.  Jasper was christened June 20th, 1779 at Chester-le-Street, the son of Margaret & Henry Thornton.

Jasper, a stone mason, had previously been married to Thomasine Middleton who died of consumption in June 1809. 

Jasper died in 1837 at Gilesgate, Durham, Co Durham.

Widowed Mary was living in Sherburn Rd, Durham in 1841 & with her were children Joseph (20), a mason, Sarah (17) & Jasper (15).

In 1851 Mary was living alone in Gilesgate, Durham & was in receipt of parochial relief.

Mary died in Oct-December 1856 at Sherburn Hospital, Durham.

sp. George Thornton born January 21st, 1817 & christened October 12th, 1817 at Gateshead, Co Durham
sp. Francis Thornton christened December 12th, 1819 at Bishopwearmouth
sp. Joseph Thornton christened September 30th, 1821 at South Hylton, Co Durham
sp. Sarah Ann Thornton christened January 26th, 1823 at South Hylton, Co Durham
sp. Jasper Thornton christened October 9th, 1825 at Houghton-le-Spring
sp. Dorothy Thornton born September 1827; buried September 12th, 1827 at Houghton-le-Spring
