Susannah Speed was the eighth child of James Speed & Mary Elliott born November 26th, 1889 at Gosforth, Northumberland.
The family were living at Team Colliery, Lamesley, Co Durham by 1891, where Susannah’s father was a coal miner.
In 1901 Susannah was still living at home at Whitefield Pit Cottages, Penshaw, Co Durham.
Susannah was living with her sister Elizabeth & her husband Peter Talbot & family in 1911 at 5 Ravensworth Terrace, Ravensworth Colliery, Lamesley, Co Durham. Susannah’s widowed mother Mary Speed was also living with them.
Susannah married Christopher Simpson, a colliery blacksmith, on February 28th, 1914 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Chester-le-Street. Christopher was born April 11th, 1889 at Urpeth, Co. Durham, the son of Esther Gill & Ralph Simpson, a coal miner.
The 1939 register shows Susannah & Christopher (listed as Chris) living at 44 Mitchell St, Chester-le-Street. Chris was a colliery pipe fitter.
Christopher of 44 Mitchell St, Chester-le-Street died on February 6th, 1955 at The General Hospital, Chester-le-Street. Administration of his estate was granted to widow Susannah & his effects were £799.
Susannah died in Jan-March 1971 in Birtley, Co Durham.
