Elizabeth Jane Speed was the fifth child of Robert Speed & Ann Hunter born April-June 1853 at Birtley, Co Durham.
Sadly Elizabeth’s mother died in 1856 & she & her 2 sisters & brother were living with their widowed father in 1861 at Perkinsville, Pelton, Co Durham.
Elizabeth was still living at home in 1871 with her father & step-mother Isabella. They were living at 17 Chester South Moor, Chester-le-Street & Elizabeth was working as an agricultural labourer.
Elizabeth married William Hurworth on August 9th, 1873 at Chester-le-Street. William was born April-June 1851 at Chester-le-Street, the son of Maria Harle & William Hurworth, an agricultural labourer.
Elizabeth & William had a son Robert in October 1873 who sadly only lived for 3 days.
In 1881 Elizabeth & William were living at Chester Moor, Chester-le-Street & William was a coal miner. They had 2 daughters by this time – Ann (6) & Maria (4).
The family had moved to 4 Sour Milk Hill, Gateshead by 1891 & William was still a coal miner. Daughter Maria was still at home & William & Elizabeth now had a son William (5).
Daughter Maria married William Allen, a house painter, in 1896 at Gateshead.
Daughter Ann married Christopher Foote, a gardener, in 1897 at Gateshead.
By 1901 William was retired from coal mining & he & Elizabeth were living at Blue Quarry Rd, Gateshead. Only son William was at home & working as a cartman.
William, aged 51, died in Jan-March 1902 at Gateshead.
In 1911 widowed Elizabeth was living with son William, a general carter, at 128 Sodhouse Bank, Sheriff Hill, Gateshead.
There is a death for Elizabeth Hurworth in July-September 1930 registered at Gateshead.
