Robert Speed was the third child of John Speed & Jane Ann Watt born April 30th, 1898 & christened May 19th, 1898 at Holy Trinity, Pelton, Co Durham.
In 1901 Robert, his older brother & sister & his parents were living at 7 A Street, Pelton where his father was a joiner at the colliery.
The family were still living at A Street in 1911 but had now grown with 2 younger brothers for Robert.
During WW1 Robert served in the Royal Navy on ships Victory II and Birmingham.
Robert married Florence Hall in April-June 1923 at Chester-le-Street. Florence was born September 23rd, 1892.
At the time of the 1939 register Robert & Florence were living at 9 Wash Houses, Birtley, Chester-le-Street with 2 children – one of which was John, an apprentice coach painter. Robert’s widowed mother Jane was living with them. Robert was working as a machine operator for ROF Birtley.
Florence died in Oct-December 1968 in Durham North.
Robert, aged 80, died in Jan-March 1979 in Gateshead, Co. Durham.
