George Speed was the second child of George Speed & Margaret Roxby christened October 14th, 1821 at Chester-le-Street.
In 1841 George, aged 20, was an apprentice living with Stephen Roxby (35), a grocer & draper, & his family at Front St, Easington Lane, Co Durham.
George emigrated to the United States sometime before 1850 when he married Elizabeth Lamb on October 9th, 1850 in Cuyahoga, Ohio.
The 1850 census of Cuyahoga, Ohio shows George, a grocer, with wife Elizabeth (1824-1869), & daughters Margaret (6) & Ella (3).
In 1860 George & Elizabeth were still living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, & George was now a saloon keeper. With them were Margaret, Ella & a son George (m. Rachel Hawkins) (6).
Daughter Margaret married Samuel H Harrison on December 18th, 1862 at Cuyahoga. After the death of her husband in 1881 Margaret married again, her second husband being William Smith.
Elizabeth died on February 27th, 1869 at 90 Seneca St. & was buried at Highland Park Cemetery, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA. The cause of death was inflammation of the bowels.
George of Seneca St. died December 25th, 1869 & was buried in Erie Cemetery & removed to Highland Park Cemetery, Cuyahoga, Ohio, in 1921.
In 1880 son George & his wife Rachael (Thompson) Aukins who was born in Ireland were living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga where George was a plumber. With them was Martha Hawkins, aged 12. They had married in 1873 in Cuyahoga & consent for George’s marriage to take place was granted by his guardian, R. H Davidson.
On December 3rd, 1882 daughter Ella married Henry Willard Hopkins, a cigar merchant, in Cuyahoga.
