Margaret Speed [sp.1.6.4.2.6]

Margaret Speed was the sixth child of George Speed & Margaret Roxby christened September 10th, 1830 at Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.

In 1841 Margaret was living at home at 44 George St, Sherburn, Pittington, Co Durham. Her father George was a coal miner & she had a younger brother & older sister still living at home.

On August 20th, 1849 Margaret married Robert Curry at Shadforth, Co Durham.  Robert was christened September 7th, 1823 at Long Benton, Northumberland, the son of Ann & William Curry.

In 1851 Margaret & Robert were living at the Square, Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham & Robert was a coal miner.  They had a 1 year old son William.

Margaret & Robert were living at Downs Lane, Hetton-le-Hole in 1861 & Robert was described as a labourer.  They now had 3 more children as well as William – George (9), Margaret Ann (5) & Isabella (2).

Margaret & Robert were living at ‘Downs Pit’, Hetton-le-Hole in 1871 & Robert was now a ….keeper at Downs Pit.  Children at home were William, labourer at the pit, Margaret A (15), Isabella (12), Elizabeth (9), Robert (7), George (5) & Mary (1).  They also had a 20 year old boarder, Daniel Finkling.

Son William married Isabella Dixon Charlton in 1873 at Houghton-le-Spring.
Daughter Margaret Ann married James Miller, a coal miner, in 1877 at Houghton-le-Spring.

In 1881 the family were living at Eppleton Pit, Great Eppleton, Houghton-le-Spring, Co Durham & Robert was now a heap inspector at the pit.  At home were Robert, a stoker on a railway engine, Elizabeth, George, a coal miner, & Mary.

Daughter Elizabeth married William Greenwell Richardson, a coal miner, in 1882 in Houghton-le-Spring.

Son Robert married Catherine Johnstone in 1885 in Sunderland.  By 1911 widowed Robert was living in Gateshead where he was a coal trimmer with a son & 2 daughters.  With them was Robert’s niece, Isabella Miller, daughter of his sister Margaret.

Margaret & Robert were living at 6 Caroline St, Hetton-le-Hole in 1891 & Robert was described as a coal miner.  At home were George, a general labourer, & Mary.

Daughter Mary married Thomas Gray, a coal miner, in 1892 in Houghton-le-Spring.

Son George married Eleanor Winlow in 1894 in Houghton-le-Spring.

Robert died at Caroline St in Oct-December 1898.

In 1901 widowed Margaret was living with son George, a coal miner banksman & also widowed, & his children, Robert (5) & George (3).  They were still at 6 Caroline St.

Margaret, aged 77 died at Caroline St in Oct-December 1907.
