Sarah Speed was the third child of John Roxby Speed & Hannah Wheatley born June 26th, 1860 at Easington Lane, Co Durham.
In 1861 Sarah & her parents & older brother George were living at Murton Lane, Easington Lane, Hetton-le-Hole. 9 month old Sarah was listed as Hannah in the census.
In 1871 the family were living at High St, Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham where Sarah’s father was a coal miner. Sadly Sarah’s father died 6 years later.
Sarah married Edward Scott in July-September 1880 at Gateshead. Edward was born c1844 at Boldon, Co Durham, the son of Jane & Andrew Scott, a blacksmith & publican. Edward had previously been married to Jane Elizabeth Fenwick who died in 1879 & was buried at Holy Trinity, Washington.
In 1881 Sarah & Edward were living at 6 North Biddick, Harraton, Chester-le-Street & Edward was described as a journeyman blacksmith. With them were children from Edwards’s first marriage – Mary Jane (13) & Catherine H (11).
By 1891 Edward & Sarah were living at 6 Charlotte St, Gateshead & Edward was still a blacksmith. His daughter Catherine, a dressmaker, was still living with them & he & Sarah now had daughters Jane (8) & Beatrice ( 8 months).
Edward & Sarah had moved to 85 Edgeware Rd, Elswick, Newcastle-upon-Tyne by 1901 & only daughter Jane, a dressmaker, was living at home. Edward continued to be a blacksmith.
Edward & Sarah were found at the same address at the time of the 1911 census, now described as a 3-roomed self-contained flat. Edward worked as a machine tool smith for Armstrong Whitworth Co at the Elswick Ordnance Dept. It was noted on the census that Sarah had had 8 children, sadly one of whom was still living.
