Matthew Speed was born c1650 & lived at ‘Birkley’, Co Durham. A number of the Speed family were stated to be of ‘Birkley’ in the Chester-le-Street parish records. However it is likely ‘Birkley’ was known later as Birtley, a village in the parish of Chester-le-Street.

Matthew was buried January 10th, 1714 at St Mary & St Cuthbert’s, Chester-le-Street.
