Miranda Stone [st.1.4.2]

Miranda Stone was the second child of Benjamin Stone & Sarah Duffell born February 6th, 1849 & christened March 18th, 1849 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, Staffs.

In 1851 Miranda & her parents & new baby brother Benjamin were living at Guns Lane, West Bromwich.

By 1861 Miranda’s family had moved to Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire & were living at 20 New St.

Miranda married Arthur Ford on September 20th, 1869 at Wolstanton, Staffs.  Arthur was christened April 4th, 1847 in Newcastle-under-Lyme, the son of Jane & William Ford.

In 1871 Miranda & Arthur were living at Birks Row, Knutton, Wolstanton with their infant daughter, Sarah Jane.  Arthur was a collier.

Miranda & Arthur were still in Birks Row, number 7, in 1881 & with them were Sarah Jane, William A (6), Emma (4) & Thomas (9 months).  Also living with them was Miranda’s brother, Isaiah Stone, & an 8 year old  nephew, listed as Abel Ford.  This was in fact Isaiah’s son, Abel Stone. They were living near to Miranda’s parents at number 4 Birks Row.

The family were still at Birks Row (no.6) in 1891 & Arthur was still a collier.  Children at home were (William) Arthur, an iron worker, Emma, Thomas, Edward (8), Alice (6), Isaiah (4) & Ann (2).

By 1901 Miranda & Arthur had moved to 10 Arthur St, Knutton & Arthur was now described as a coal miner cutter below ground.  At home were Arthur, Thomas, an ironworker roller, Edward & Isaiah, both ironworkers at mill works, Alice, Ann, Joseph (9) & Ethel (8).

The 1911 census shows the family living at 6 Platt St, Newcastle-under-Lyme.  Arthur was described as a coal worker not in work.  Six children were still at home, Arthur, Edward, Isaiah & Joseph were all ironworkers at the blast furnace, Alice & Annie were both charwomen.  It was noted on the census that Miranda had had 12 children, but 2 had died.  Daughter Ethel was working as a housemaid for the Butterworth (wholesale grocer) family in Newcastle-under-Lyme. 

Miranda died in Oct-December 1918 at Newcastle-under-Lyme, aged 69.

Arthur died in Oct-December 1923 at Newcastle-under-Lyme, aged 76.
