Robert Stone [st.1.4.4]

Robert Stone was the fourth child of Benjamin Stone & Sarah Duffell born at Hill Top, West Bromwich & christened January 11th, 1857 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, Staffs.

By 1861 Robert’s family had moved to Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire & were living at 20 New St.

By 1871 Robert & his parents had returned to Staffordshire & were living at Birks’s Row, Knutton, Wolstanton. Robert, like his father Benjamin & brother Isaiah were all puddlers at the iron works.

Robert married Victoria Elizabeth Boulton on March 27th, 1880 at St John’s, Burslem, Staffs.  Victoria was born c1852 at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs, the daughter of Elizabeth & John Bourne Boulton, a smallware dealer.

In 1881 Robert & Victoria were living at 14 Mortimer Rd, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs.  With them was Florence Boulton Stone, aged 8, & described as ‘daughter’, & a 1 month old son, Abil.  Robert was an iron worker.  There is a birth for Florence Victoria Boulton in April-June 1872 at Newcastle-under-Lyme – presumably Victoria’s illegitimate daughter.

By 1891 Robert & Victoria had moved to 7 Gallows Tree Lane, Newcastle-under-Lyme & Robert was still an iron worker.  Daughter Florence V (18) was now a tailoress & Robert & Victoria had 6 more children – James (9), Isiah (8), John (7), Joseph (5), Sarah (3) & Benjamin (1).

In 1901 Robert & Victoria were living at 16 Lower St, Newcastle-under-Lyme & Robert was now described as an ironworker puddler.  At home were James, a fish merchant, Isaiah, a puddler like his father, John & Joseph, both brickmakers at a quarry & Benjamin.  Daughter Sarah was visiting her half-sister Florence, who had married Thomas Morley, in Stoke-on-Trent where Florence was living with daughter Sarah (3) & son Thomas (1).

Robert died, aged 51, in April-June 1903 at Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Son James married Elizabeth Davies in Stoke-on-Trent in April-June 1904.  By 1911 James, still a fish salesman & Elizabeth were living at George St, Newcastle-under-Lyme with a 6 year old son James Davies Stone.

In 1911 widowed Victoria was living at 33 Lower St, Newcastle-under-Lyme where she was a shop keeper (fish).  With her was Isaiah, a fish salesman, John, a brickyard labourer, Joseph, a fish salesman, Sarah, domestic servant at home & Benjamin, a brickyard labourer.  Also with them were J.C. K Boulton (Victoria’s brother?), a clogger, listed as a visitor, & relatives Elizabeth Morley (5), James & Emma Connelly & their children Harold & Bernard. It was noted on the census that Victoria had had 10 children, only 8 of whom were still alive.

Son Isaiah married Maggie Maria Stevenson in Oct-December 1911 at Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Son Benjamin married Elsie May Whitfield on May 23rd, 1915 at Knutton, Staffs.
