Charles Stone [st.1.8.1]

Charles Stone was the first child of John Stone & Mary Haywood born Oct-December 1858 at Crewe, Cheshire.

Charles & his parents were living at Harwood St, West Bromwich in 1861 where his father was a labourer.

By 1871 Charles’ family had moved to Pendleton,  Lancs where his father was now an iron puddler.

In 1881 Charles had left home & was boarding at 5 Simpson St, Thornaby, Yorkshire.  He was a puddler at the iron works.

Charles married Elizabeth Ann Rushton on April 12th, 1884 at St Mary’s, Eccles, Salford, Lancs.  Elizabeth was born c1857, the daughter of William Rushton, a factory operative.  They both gave their place of residence as Pendleton at the time of the marriage & Charles was a puddler.

Charles first travelled to the USA in 1886 & then in 1888 he & Elizabeth & their 2 daughters, Sarah Ann & Clara emigrated to Pennsylvania.

In the 1900 US census Charles & his family were living in Lower St Clair, Allegheny, Pennsylvania with their daughters Sarah & Clara & 2 more children who had been born in Pennsylvania - Alice (8) & Henry (4).  Charles was still working as a puddler.

Daughter Sarah Ann married Amos G Walton on January 29th, 1902 in Allegheny, Pa.  Amos was born October 5th, 1880 in Pennsylvania & at the time of their marriage he was a mill worker.  After their marriage they lived in Warren, Ohio & were to have 2 sons, Raymond & Charles.

Daughter Clara married James G Hansel on September 9th, 1903 in Allegheny.  At the time of the 1910 census Clara & James were living in Pittsburgh, Allegheny with their 2 sons, Edmond J (3) & Charles James (2).  Also with them was Clara’s sister Alice.

Charles & Elizabeth were still living in Allegheny in 1910 & 1920, with their son Henry being the only child at home.

On April 18th, 1914 daughter Alice married Harry Clark in Detroit, Michigan.  Harry was an auto worker & had been born in Pennsylvania c1889, son of Elizabeth Hall & John Clark.  By 1930 Alice was widowed & living back in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania with her son Harry R, aged 15.

By 1930 Charles had died & widowed Elizabeth was still living with son Henry at Mount Oliver, Allegheny.

Son Henry married Anna Harvey (nee Barker) & continued to live in Pennsylvania where they were listed in the 1940 US census.
