William Stone was the third child of John Stone & Mary Haywood born April 1864 at Knutton, Staffs.
By 1871 William’s family had moved to Pendleton, Lancs where his father was an iron puddler.
In 1881 William was still living at home at 52 Borough St, Pendleton with his parents & brothers & sisters. He was working as a drawer in the cotton mill – a drawer organises cotton threads to form a pattern.
William married Mary Jane Hamilton in April-June 1886 at Barton-upon-Irwell, Lancs. Mary Jane was born 1860 in Burnley, Lancs.
In 1891 William & Mary & daughters Mary A (3) & Elizabeth H (1) were living at 27 Alderson St, Pendleton, next door to William’s parents & his 6 sisters & 1 brother. William’s occupation was unchanged & Mary was working as a cotton winder. They also had 2 lodgers living with them.
On November 21st, 1894 William & Mary sailed from Liverpool on the SS Ohio to Philadelphia, USA with their 2 children.
The 1900 US census shows William & Mary living at Paterson Avenue, Passaic, New Jersey. It was recorded on the census that William had emigrated to USA in 1891 so presumably he had returned to England to bring his family out to the US in 1894. William was working as a silk mill weaver & they now had 3 children – their 2 daughters and a son John (5) having been born in New Jersey. It was also noted on the census that Mary was unable to read or write.
William died some time before the next census in 1910 when widowed Mary was still living in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey with daughter Mary A & son John. Daughter Elizabeth had married Thomas Samson, a dyer, who was born December 1884 in Scotland, & in 1910 they were also living in Passaic with their 3 year old daughter May.
Mary was found in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey in 1920, living with her daughter Mary (32) & a 34 year old boarder, William Saxon, who was born in England. Daughter Elizabeth & husband Thomas were still found in Passaic & now had another daughter, Millicent (8).
By 1930 daughter Mary (now listed as M Alice) had become head of the household & mother Mary was still living with her. They were now living in Totowa, Passaic & with them at the time of the census were Mae Frances (23) & Millicent Samson (18).
In 1940 daughter Mary A was still living in Totowa & working in real estate for a bank. She had 2 boarders with her, Elizabeth Wilde (aged 50 & married – possibly Mary’s sister) & Mary J ? (aged 78 – probably Mary’s mother), both born in England. Thomas Samson was recorded in the 1940 census as divorced & boarding in Passaic. There is a record of an Elizabeth Wild (age 39 & born in England) with husband Harold C(E?) Wild (age 39) living in Passaic in 1930. Harold Wilde, an expressman, was found in the 1940 census to be boarding in Paterson, Passaic and recorded as married but without his wife.
Mary died in 1944 & was buried in Laurel Grove Memorial Park, Totowa, Passaic, New Jersey. Buried alongside her are son John E Stone, daughter Mary Alice Stone & daughter Elizabeth Samson & Thomas Samson (born 1886).
