Henry Benjamin Stone was the second child of James Henry Stone & Emily Ellen Young born June 5th, 1875 at Stourbridge, Worcs.
In 1881 Henry & his parents were living at Park St, Stourbridge. He had a younger brother & 2 sisters.
The family were living at 100 High St, Stourbridge in 1891 & Henry & his brother William were both working as shop boys.
By 1901 Henry was living in Nottingham. He was boarding at 38 Noel St, Hyson Green & he was working as a tailor, shopkeeper & was described as an employer.
In Jan-March 1904 Henry married Isabel Mary Perkin, a teacher of English, the marriage being registered at Fairfield, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire. Isabel was born August 11th, 1871 at Penkridge, Staffs, the daughter of Lucy Ann & James Perkin, a farmer.
In 1911 Henry & Isabel were living at 393 Mansfield Rd, Nottingham & Henry was now a ladies & gents tailor. They had 2 children – Rachel (5) & Frances (3). Living with them was a 20 year old governess, niece Louise Hawley. They also had a general domestic servant.
As well as being a tailor & shopkeeper Henry was also involved with running cinemas. In 1913 he was granted a music licence for the Regent Hall, Mansfield Rd, Nottingham. As director & licensee of the Scala Picture House, Nottingham, in 1917 Henry was fined 3 guineas for failing to keep a proper record of all employees engaged by them over the age of 16. He was also fined a further 3 guineas for making a false entry. (Sheffield Evening Telegraph, August 11th, 1917)
On December 4th, 1924 Henry applied for the Freedom of the City of London at which time he was occupying premises at 8 Alexandra St, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham. Here he was carrying on the business of hosiery & glove manufacturer. He applied to obtain the Freedom of the City, by redemption, in the Company of Glovers.
At the time of the 1939 Register Henry & Isabel were listed with son Edwyn living at 8 Alexandra St, Nottingham. Henry was described as chairman of hosiery manufacturing company & son Edwyn was the director & manager of the company.
Isabel died on December 27th, 1955 at 8 Alexandra St, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham, aged 84. Probate was granted to Henry & son Edwyn, both hosiers, on February 4th, 1956. Her effects were £1,638.19s.11d.
Henry died on January 22nd, 1963 at Nottingham, aged 87, at First Avenue, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham. Probate was granted on April 8th, 1963 to son Edwyn Benjamin Russell, hosiery manufacturer, daughter Rachel Louise (wife of Vladimir Josef Kmoch) & Isabel Frances Stone, spinster. His effects were £38,222.
