Letitia Jane Stone was the third child of Benjamin Stone & Amelia Hackett born January 7th, at Lombard St, & christened March 16th, 1862 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, Staffs.
In 1871 Letitia & her parents were living at Dudley Rd, West Bromwich & she had 2 sisters – Eliza & Miranda. Visiting was Emily E Young, aged 17, whom older brother James was to marry later that year.
In 1881 the family were living at 19 Hill St, Stourbridge, Worcs & Letitia was by now a school teacher. Her younger sister Miranda was still at home.
On December 23rd 1886 Letitia married Walter George Fenwick at St John the Baptist, Hackney, Middlesex. Letitia gave her address as ‘Cleeve’, Bradburne Rd, Bournmouth, her parents home. Witnesses at the wedding were Arthur Thomas Fenwick & Cecilia Fenwick. Walter was born in July-September 1864 at Lambeth, Middlesex, the son of Fanny & Edward Fenwick, a railway guard.
In 1891 Letitia & Walter were living at 3 Malta Rd, Leyton, Essex & Walter was a board school teacher. They had a son Walter C, aged 2.
They were still living at Leyton in 1901, now at 99 Waterloo Rd. Walter was a school master & their son Walter Cecil was still at home.
By 1911 Letitia & Walter had moved to 31 Halford Rd, Leyton & Walter was described as an assistant teacher for the local county council education service. Son Walter was still at home & was now employed as a 2nd class clerk in the civil service, working at a government estate duty office at Somerset House.
Son Walter was to marry Madge Adeline Gunningham in 1915. Madge had been working as a civil servant at the time of the 1911 census.
Walter, of 6 Lake Walk, Lake View Estate, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex died at Ellesdene, Victoria Rd, Clacton-on-Sea on April 12th, 1938. Probate was granted at Ipswich on May 20th, to widow Letitia Jane & son Walter Cecil, a civil servant. Walter’s effects were £265.4s.2d.
The 1939 register shows widowed Letitia living at 6 Lake Walk, Clacton & she was a retired school mistress.
Letitia died on September 2nd, 1946, at 6 Lake Walk, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, aged 84. Probate was granted on October 24th at Ipswich to son Walter Cecil, permanent civil servant. Letitia’s effects were £1,484.12s.1d.
Son Walter was to be awarded the MBE in 1928 for his work as Deputy Director of Contracts in the Air Ministry. In June 1948 he was made a member of the Imperial Service Order (Buckhurst Hill Essex). Walter was made a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society also in 1948.
