Joseph Stone was the second child of James Stone & Mary Hebert born Oct-November 1841 at Hall Fields, Bilston, & christened November 28th, 1841 at St Leonards, Bilston, Wolverhampton, Staffs.
Joseph was living at home in 1851 at Old Meeting St, West Bromwich. His father had died by this time, but there were 2 brothers & 4 sisters still at home.
In 1861 Joseph was still at Old Meeting St, number 5, with his mother. He was a railway clerk.
Joseph married Elizabeth Marsh in Jan-March 1864 at West Bromwich. Elizabeth was christened August 9th, 1840, at All Saints, West Bromwich, the daughter of Jemima & William Marsh, a chain maker.
By 1871 Joseph & Elizabeth were living at 12 Ravensworth Terr., Gateshead, Co Durham where Jospeh was a clerk in iron manufacture. They had 3 children by this time – Lucy J (6) who had been born in Bushey, Hertfordshire, Joseph H (5) & William M (3) both born in Newcastle, Northumberland.
In 1881 the family were living at 16 Whitehall Rd, Gateshead & Joseph was described as a commercial clerk in the iron trade. At home were Lucy, Joseph, a commercial clerk in the chemical industry, William & Mary Elizabeth (4). With them at the time of the census was Joseph’s mother Mary Stone, aged 78.
By 1891 Joseph & Elizabeth had moved further north to Newburn, Tyneside, N’land. They were living at 1 Berkley Terr & Joseph was now the secretary of a public company. Still at home were Lucy, Joseph, a commercial clerk, Mary & visiting them was Elizabeth’s sister Lucy Marsh, aged 48. They had a domestic servant, Mary White. By 1891 son William was living in Dumfries, Scotland & was an elementary school teacher. An announcement in the Edinburgh Evening News of December 16th, 1892 stated that William had been appointed headmaster of St Peter’s School, Musselburgh. He & his wife Eliza (nee Gooden) who married in 1894 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne were living in Musselburgh at the time of the 1901 census.
Son Joseph married Elizabeth Agnes Singer in 1895 in Newcastle.
They were still at Newburn in 1901, now at Millfield House & Joseph’s job was unchanged. Daughters Lucy & Mary were still at home & visiting at the time of the census was John W Plaxton, a 28 year old clergyman of the Church of England. Daughter Mary married John William Plaxton early in 1902.
Joseph, a steel works manager of Newburn-on-Tyne, died on September 15th, 1902 at Cullercoats, Northumberland. Probate was granted on October 10th, 1902 to widow Elizabeth & his effects were £783. The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail of September 17th, 1902 reported on Joseph’s death. The paper noted that he was commercial manager to Mssrs. John Spencer & Sons Ltd of Newburn & was a prominent figure in the iron & steel trades of the Tyne. He had been staying at Cullercoats for the benefit of his health.
Elizabeth, aged 69, died on April 15th, 1910 at 55 Beach Avenue, Whitley, Northumberland. Probate was granted to daughter Lucy Jemima, spinster, on May 25th, 1910 & her effects were £722.11s.10d.
In 1911 daughter Mary & husband John Plaxton were living at St Andrews Lodge, the Liberty, Wells, Somerset where John was the clergyman. They had a son Cecil Andrew (8) & daughter Ruth (5). Living with them was Mary’s sister, Lucy Jemima, still single & living on private means. John became Vicar of Wells Cathedral from 1902-1919, & subsequently became Vicar of Langport for 16 years. He died on September 30th, 1935, aged 62, at Wells Cottage Hospital. A memorial window was dedicated to him in Langport Parish Church, reflecting his particular interest in music (John played the viola).
Son Joseph & wife Elizabeth were still living in the north east of England in 1911, at Liddell Terrace, Gateshead & Joseph was a rate collector for the city council. They had 4 children at home – Henry Joseph Singer (15), Catherine Elizabeth (13), Hugh (8) & Mary Lucy Marsh (6).
The 1939 register shows widowed daughter Mary Plaxton & her sister Lucy still living together at Vicar’s Close, Wells, Somerset. Both were described as ‘private means’.
Son Joseph was a retired local government official in 1939 & he & his wife Elizabeth & son Hugh were living at Liddell Terr, Gateshead.
Son William & his wife Eliza had returned to England by 1939 & were living in Bath, Somerset & William was a retired head teacher.
