Samuel Wall [w.9.5]

Samuel Wall was the fifth child of Joseph Wall & Sarah Timmins born December 12th 1855, at Tividale, Rowley Regis, & christened February 19th, 1860 at Christ Church, West Bromwich,Staffs.

In 1861 Samuel & his parents & family were living at Chapel St, Rowley Regis.

Samuel was still living at home in 1871 at 20 Trows Square, Wednesbury with his parents & family. Samuel was a puddler at the iron works.

Samuel married Emma Slater in Oct-December 1879 at Walsall, Staffs. Emma was born in Oct-December 1849 at Wednesbury, the daughter of Mary Mincher & William Slater, a gun lock forger.

In 1881 Samuel (Saul in census) & Emma were living at 9 Oakeswell St, Wednesbury with Emma’s parents & brothers. They had a son Frederick (14 months) & Samuel was a puddler.

They were still living with Emma’s parents, the Slaters, in 1891 at the same address. Samuel was still a puddler at the iron works. They now had 6 children – Frederick, Annie (9), Henry (8), Alice (6), William (3) & Samuel (12 months).

 Emma died, aged 42, in Oct-December 1891 at Wednesbury,  shortly after giving birth to a daughter Emma who also sadly died in infancy.    

At the time of the 1901 census widowed Samuel was living at New Buildings, Wellcroft St, Wednesbury with children Frederick, a socket maker, Annie, Harry, an iron puddler, Alice, William & Samuel. Also with him was mother-in-law Mary Slater (79), also now widowed & a niece Emily Slater (7). Son Samuel was admitted to St Bartholomew’s school for boys in January 1901.

Samuel died in Jan-March 1909, aged 53, at Walsall.

In 1911 daughter Annie & husband William Thomas Arnold, a blacksmith striker, were living at 50 Prince St, Walsall.  Living with them was William’s widowed mother Emma Arnold & Annie’s brother Samuel Wall, an underhand puddler.

Son Harry had married Winifred Murphy in 1906 at Walsall, Staffs & in 1911 they were living at Pleck Rd, Walsall with 2 daughters (Margaret Winifred [4] & Elizabeth [3]) & a son Henry (11 months).Harry was a puddler at the ironworks.

Daughter Alice married Harry Shade in 1907 at Walsall. In 1911 Alice & Harry were living at 149 Vicarage Rd, Wednesbury with their 3 year old daughter Gladys. Harry was an iron planer.

Son William had married Hannah Cooper in 1909 at Walsall and in 1911 they were living at 58 Long St, Walsall with their two children, Elsie born 1909 and Hilda M born 1911. William was an iron worker.

The 1939 register shows daughter Annie & husband William Arnold living at 50 Prince St, Walsall where William was a blacksmith at the gas works.  With them was Annie’s brother William Wall, still listed as married, who was a trenchman navvy for the water board. 

In 1939 son Samuel was living at 48 Navigation Rd, Walsall with his wife Hannah (nee Warman) & family where he was an iron sheet mill labourer.
