Harriet Webster was the fourth child of William Webster & Elizabeth Winder born September 21st, 1857 at Dorney & christened November 8th, 1857 at Burnham, Bucks.
In 1861 she was living with her parents & sisters at Dorney Wood Farm.
In 1871 Harriet was a pupil at Wycombe End School in Beaconsfield, Bucks.
Harriet was living at home at Dorney Wood Farm at the time of the 1881 census, but on April 19th of that year she married Louis William Francis Deane. Witnesses at the wedding were William Webster & Thos. Deane. Louis was christened June 11th, 1856 at Hambleden, the son of Thomas Deane & Emily Susan Clift of Huttons Farm, Hambleden.
In 1891 Harriet & Louis were living at Huttons Farm, Hambleden, Louis having taken over the farm after the death of his widowed father in 1887. They had 4 sons – Louis William (9), James Webster (7), Norman Winder (5) & Frederic Clifton (2).
After 1891 the family moved to Burro Farm, Hambleden.
Harriet & Louis (listed as Denne on Ancestry.co.uk) had moved to Westfield House, Towersey, Bucks by 1901 & Louis was still a farmer. Children at home were Norman, Frederic, Alan Francis (9), Stuart Leslie (5) & Edmund Colstrope (2). Another son, Brian Edward, was born in 1894 but sadly died in infancy.
Finally in 1903 a daughter was born – Violet Frances! Violet was christened at the Chapel Royal, Hampton Park Palace. In 1903 Louis was in charge of the King’s horses & had the title ‘Superintendent of the Royal Paddocks’. He was entitled to live in one of the houses attached to Hampton Park Palace. The family later returned to Hambleden.
An article in the South Bucks Standard of September 14th, 1906 reports that son Frederic had recently been in Scandinavian waters aboard the training ship HMS Euryalus. Whilst there the King of Sweden inspected the ship & while doing so he singled out Frederic & asked how old he was & remarked what a fine English boy he was. He shook hands with Frederic & wished him good luck. Frederic’s measurements, having been remarked upon, were taken – his height was 6ft and a half inch, he weighed 12st.9lbs & measured 41 inches around his chest!
By 1911 Louis & Harriet had returned to Hambleden & were living at Colstrope Farm, Colstrope where Louis was a farmer. They had 5 children at home – Frederic, an able seaman on the battleship HMS Hindustan, Alan who was working on the farm, Stuart, a student, Edmund & Violet. Visiting was Harriet's younger sister Madeline Webster. The family had a domestic servant. (The Deane family had been associated with Colstrope since the late 16 th century!)
The Buckingham Advertiser & Free Press of June 14th, 1924 reported that Viscount Hambleden brought an action against Louis. An order prevented Louis’ workmen & agents from entering the lands of the Viscount, known as Pheasant’s Hill, & removing trees & game therefrom.
Louis died on February 27th, 1928 at The Beeches, Hambleden & was buried on March 1st, 1928 at Hambleden.
Harriet died in November 1931, age 74 at the Beeches, Hambleden. She was buried on 20th November 1931 at Hambleden, Buckinghamshire.
Permission to administer Louis’ will was granted on December 18th, 1935. Daughter Violet Frances, now married to Maurice Campbell Badcock, administered the will & the effects amounted to £1321.
Several of Louis & Harriet’s sons went to live abroad as detailed below.
Son Louis William (according to Esther Byrt he was known as Dick) served in the Royal Army Service Corps during WW1 & was posted to France in 1917. After the war Louis went to South Africa & lived in Bloemfontein, South Africa as shown on his Army record dated 1922. There is also a record of Louis, a chartered accountant, & his wife Margaret Mary & children Marjorie (18), Phyllis (15), Vyvyan (9) & Mary (7) travelling from South Africa on the RMS Arundel Castle which arrived in Southampton on April 14th, 1930.
Son Frederic Clifton also lived in South Africa from 1913-15 before returning to England & enlisting in the Royal Navy. He graduated in 1918 as an officer in the Royal Flying Corps. He spent many years working in civil aviation & was a test pilot for the RAF. He married Helen Marion Bayley in 1922. Helen Marion was the daughter of Ellinor Webster [we.12.8] & William Mills Bayley & therefore Frederic married his cousin. Frederic died in 1935 as a result of injuries previously sustained in a motor vehicle accident. His car was in collision with a lorry on the Basingstoke by-pass, as a result of which he received £8,000 damages due to the negligent driving by the lorry driver.
Son Stuart Leslie married Mary Madeline Rumbold in 1919 & worked as an accountant in South Africa. Stuart served as an officer in the Rifle Brigade, Kimberley Regiment, S. Africa during WW1. There is a record of Stuart & Mary returning to Southampton in May1952 from Durban, South Africa.
Son Edmund Colstrope married Mabel Helen Bunting & also lived in South Africa. There is a record of Edmund, a manager, & his wife & family – Louis Edmund Dangrove (10), Pamel R (9) & Gwendoline Barbara (5) returning to England from South Africa on board the Edinburgh Castle in May 1937. They gave their address in England as c/o Badcock, Sanford, Staines Middlesex (presumably the address of Edmund’s sister, Violet). Wife Mabel & the 2 oldest children had previously returned to England in April 1930 on the same ship as brother-in-law Louis William.
Son James Webster married Phyllis May Bayley on January 9th 1919 at Wexham, Bucks. Phyllis was the daughter of Ellinor Webster [we.12.8] & William Mills Bayley & therefore cousins married again. After serving in WW1 James & his family emigrated to Canada in 1921.
Son Norman Winder married Maude Eveline Knight on Jan 11th, 1908 at Greenhill, Middlesex. He gave his occupation at that time as a farmer of Colstrope Farm, Hambleden. Maude, aged 27 was the daughter of George Birkbeck Knight & worked as a clerk. It is believed they emigrated to Canada.
