Elizabeth Webster [we.7.3]

Elizabeth Webster was the third child of John Hearne Webster & Euphemia Kay Stewart born May 20th, 1851 & christened June 13th, 1851 at Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

Elizabeth (known as Bessie) lived in Australia until 1854. She was not at home at the time of the 1861 census.

In 1871 she was living with the family at Prospect St, Reading.

Elizabeth married Huson Morris on 19th October 1875 at St Mary's, Hayes, Bromley, Kent.  Huson was christened June 13th, 1848 at St Mary Magdalene, Peckham, Surrey, the eldest son of Thomas Morris, a surgeon, & Katherine Hannah Jackson.  Huson was a talented cricketer & played for Lancing College, the Gentlemen of West Kent & once for the MCC in 1868.

In 1881 Bessie & Huson were living at ‘The Nest’, Hayes, Bromley, & Huson was employed as a member of the stock exchange. They had 3 children – Ella M (3), Arthur H (2) & Hilda W (8 months). Visiting them was Bessie’s brother Arthur H Webster (20) & William M Inchbold (24), both clerks on the London Stock Exchange. They had a cook, a housemaid, a nursemaid & a nurse.

Living nearby at Baston Farm, Hayes were Huson’s parents & brothers & sister, his father now being a retired general practitioner.

Visiting was Ida C V Bell (25) & a niece Barbara E Fox (18), daughter of Huson’s sister Margaret who was living nearby at The Common, the home of Huson’s mother Katherine Morris, recently widowed. The usual array of servants were also present. Interestingly there were 2 children visiting at the time of the census - Effie Stewart Webster (8) & Thomas S Webster (5) both described as relatives, but who were in fact Katherine Morris’s grandchildren. They were children of Bessie Eleanor Morris (Katherine’s daughter) who had married John Stewart Webster (Elizabeth’s brother) in Australia.

Daughter Hilda married Leslie Carlton Brooksmith, a priest in the Church of England, on July 27th, 1909 at Hayes.  They were living at Down Ampney Vicarage, Cirencester, Gloucester at the time of her death in 1934.

Daughter Winifred was working as a nurse at the Victoria Hospital for Children, Chelsea at the time of the 1911 census.

Sons Arthur Huson & Norman Huson were both educated at Charterhouse.  Sadly Arthur died soon after leaving Charterhouse in April 1900 in France.  Norman became a very successful engineer.  He served during WW1 in India & was appointed 2nd Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion, The Duke of Edinburgh’s (Wiltshire Regiment) on October 7th, 1914.  Norman married Una Mary O’Dwyer in Jan-March 1920 in Kensington, London.  He devoted much time to voluntary work & was associated with the Royal Hospital & Home for Incurables, Putney.
