Joan Earnshaw was the fourth child of Frederick Earnshaw & Mary Emily Stainsby born born June 22nd, 1918 at 25 Leechmere Rd, Grangetown & christened July 9th, 1918 at St Aidan’s, Grangetown.
Joan – June 1938 – aged 20
On leaving school she worked at Binns Dept. store, Sunderland and later married Denis Bagnall Robson, a shipyard worker born at Ford, Sunderland on January 23rd 1915. Denis’s father, a ship’s plater, had moved to the Isle of Wight before WW2 & the 1939 register shows Denis, his parents John & Esther Robson & the rest of their family living at 97a York Ave, Cowes. It was here on the Isle of Wight that Joan & Denis married on July 6th, 1940 at St James' Church, East Cowes.
During the war Joan worked at White’s Ship Yard as a riveter & Denis was in the National Guard before taking a commission in the Green Howards in 1944. He went to Burma just before the war ended. After some time in the Isle of Wight, Joan moved back to the family home in Leechmere Road, Grangetown where she lived until the family moved to Indonesia where Denis was working. On return to England Joan lived at Southampton.
They had 3 children, Melanie Ann Bagnall, Denis Ian Bagnall & David Mark Bagnall. The family Bagnall name was from their grandmother on the Robson side.
Denis died August 17th, 1965 & was buried at St Mary Extra aka Butts Rd, Cemetery, Southampton.
Joan died October 15th, 2007 at Southampton.
