William Ellis [el.5.4]

William Ellis was the fourth child of William Ellis & Mary Allsop christened November 8th, 1814 at Pinxton, Derbyshire.

William married Mary Hayes on July 30th, 1839 at Pinxton, Derbyshire, both were of Pinxton Wharf.  Witnesses at the wedding were John Hays & Hannah Watson. Mary was christened December 18th, 1819 at Pinxton, the daughter of Elizabeth Wood & John Hayes, a coal miner.

In 1841 William & Mary were living at Pinxton Wharf, Pinxton where William was a coal miner. They had a 2 month old son George.

By 1851 William (Elms in Ancestry.co.uk index), still a coal miner, & Mary were still living at Pinxton Wharf with children George, Ann (6), John (4) & Elizabeth (1). Living next door were Mary’s parents – John & Elizabeth Hayes.

In 1861 William & Mary were still living in Pinxton with children George & John, both coal miners, Ann, Elizabeth, William (9), Martha (incorrectly listed as Catherine) (4) & Joseph (2). Daughter Ann was to marry Matthew Lee (or Mellor) on May 20th, 1861 at Pinxton, but sadly after having had 2 sons she died in 1866.

Son William who had been born in 1851 was christened on Easter Day, April 20th, 1862 at Pinxton & the family abode was given as Lower Kirkstead.

Daughter Ann married at age 16 on May 20th, 1861 at Pinxton.  Her husband was Matthew Mellor or Lee, aged 19.  Sadly Ann died aged just 21 & was buried on February 9th, 1866 at Pinxton.  Ann gave birth to 2 sons before her death - John George in 1863 & William in 1865.

Son George married Ann Pepper on March 28th, 1864 at Pinxton.  Widowed George married again on August 1st, 1891 at Pinxton.  His second wife was Amy Thrall.
Daughter Elizabeth married Frederick Woodward, a coal miner, on August 1st, 1870 at Pinxton.  They lived in Staveley, Derby until at least 1881 then emigrated to New Zealand. They & their 5 daughters lived in Dunedin, Otago where Frederick became a rug manufacturer.

By 1871 William & Mary had moved to Balls Row, Pinxton & still at home were William, a coal miner like his father, Martha E (14) & Joseph.

Son William married Jane Slater in 1876 in Belper, Derbyshire.  They were to have 8 children but sadly only one son, George, survived.

William, who was still working as a coal miner at the age of 67, & Mary were both found at Wharf Road, Pinxton in 1881. There were no children at home.

Mary, aged 66, died on June 26th, 1885 & was buried June 29th at Pinxton & William, aged 71, died a few months later on October 30th, 1885 & was buried November 2nd, also at Pinxton.

Daughter Martha Ellen married Edmund Claye on December 24th, 1882 at Pinxton.  Sadly Edmund died in October 1885 aged just 26 & was buried at Pinxton.  Martha married again on January 2nd, 1887 in Pinxton.  Her second husband was Isaac Sansom, a widower who was an insurance agent.

Son Joseph married Mary Ann Rudd on April 6th, 1885 at Staveley.  His occupation at the time of marriage was guard & the 1881 census shows Joseph working for the railway & lodging in Sandal Magna, Yorks.  Joseph became a coal miner after his marriage & the family lived in Staveley.

el.5.4.5 William Ellis born July 17th, 1851 at Pinxton & christened July 17th, 1851 at Pinxton, Derbyshire; buried October 1st, 1926 at S. Normanton
el.5.4.6 Joseph Ellis christened August 30th, 1853 at Blackwell, Derbyshire, died April-June 1854 at Pinxton
el.5.4.7 Martha Ellen Ellis born April-June 1856 & christened August 22nd, 1858 at Pinxton; died April-June 1919 in Pinxton
