Ann Ellis [el.6.2]

Ann Ellis was the second child of John Ellis & Sarah Reynolds christened February 28th, 1805 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire.

Ann married John Ashley on October 26th, 1826 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire. Witnesses at the wedding were George Ashmore & Mary Hill. John was christened January 16th, 1803 at North Wingfield, Derbyshire, the son of Caleb & Hannah Ashley.

In 1841 Ann & John were living at Tibshelf with her 55 year old widowed father. They had 5 children at home - William (14), Hannah (9), Mary (7), John (4), & Samuel (2). Both John & Ann’s father were coal miners.

John died in 1844 & was buried on December 29th, 1844 at St John the Baptist, Tibshelf.

Widowed Ann was still living with her father at Tibshelf in 1851, at Back Lane. Ann, who was a hose seamer, still had sons John (14) & Samuel (12), both coal miners, at home as well as a 7 year old daughter Ann. Ann’s granddaughter was also with them – Mary Ann Cluse, aged 3. Mary Ann was the child of Ann’s first daughter, Sarah Ashley who had married Hiram Clowes in 1847.

Daughter Hannah married Henry Beresford, a coal miner, in 1856 at Tibshelf.  By 1891 Hannah was widowed & was listed as a grocer living in Staveley & with her was daughter Annie Elizabeth & her husband Robert Francis.

Son William, a collier, married Elizabeth Jones who was born in Welshpool on December 27th, 1858 in Sheffield.  William & his family live in Staveley, Derbyshire until his death in 1896.

By 1861 Ann’s father had died & Ann was the head of the household at Back Lane, Tibshelf. Sons John & Samuel were still with her & employed as miners. Visiting was daughter Mary, now Mary Siddell, & her 2 daughters Sarah (6) & Ellen (2).

Son Samuel married Mary Ann Moakes in 1869 at Tibshelf.  By 1901 Samuel was widowed & still living in Tibshelf with his family.

Ann died on June 19th, 1870, aged 65, & was buried on June 21st at Tibshelf.

Ann’s children John & Ann were still living together at the time of the 1871 census at the Cottage, Tibshelf. With them was a niece Sarah A Ashley, aged 2. Daughter Ann was to marry Thomas Straw later that year in Tibshelf.  John married Lucy Dawson in 1877 in Alfreton & they & their family lived in Blackwell, Derbyshire where John was a miner.

el.6.2.5 John Ashley christened July 31st, 1836 at Blackwell by Alfreton, Derbyshire; buried April 4th, 1923 in Blackwell
el.6.2.6 Samuel Ashley christened November 11th, 1838 at Blackwell by Alfreton, Derbyshire; died at Back Lane, Tibshelf & buried May 4th, 1922 at Tibshelf
el.6.2.7 Ann Ashley christened October 9th, 1842 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire
