William Ellis was the fifth child of John Ellis & Sarah Reynolds christened June 19th, 1814 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire.
William married Mary Jarvis (nee Allen) on December 14th, 1840, at St Mary & All Saints, Chesterfield. Witnesses at the wedding were John Glossop & Ann Allen. Mary was christened March 22nd, 1807 at Staveley, Derbyshire, the daughter of John & Ann Allen. This was Mary’s second marriage as she had previously married Samuel Jarvis on May 14th, 1826 at Staveley, Derbyshire. Samuel & Mary had 2 children – Charles & Sarah. Samuel died in April-June 1839, his death being registered at Chesterfield.
In 1841 William & Mary were living at Staveley where William worked as a coal miner. At the time of the census they had a 4 day old daughter Amy who sadly died in childhood. Living with them were Mary’s children from her previous marriage – Charles & Sarah Jarvis, aged 11 & 2 respectively.
William & Mary were still living at Staveley in 1851 & William was still a coal miner, as was his step-son Charles who was still at home, along with sister Sarah. There were also 2 lodgers with them – William & Hannah Ashley who were in fact William’s nephew & niece – the children of Ann Ellis, William’s widowed sister.
In 1861 William & Mary were living at Low Gates, Staveley & with them at the time of the census was grandson Samuel Jarvis, aged 8, the son of Charles & his wife Hannah.
Mary died at Low Gates in 1863 aged 56 & was buried on April 14th, 1863 at Staveley.
Widowed William was still a coal miner in 1871. He was living with his step-son Charles Jarvis & his wife & their 8 children at Cottage Blocks, Staveley.
William died at Speedwell, Staveley in 1878, aged 63, & was buried on April 23rd, 1863 at Staveley.
